I am so gald you are able to manage your symptoms. There are many people who can manage without medicatoins., and their are many who do need them. Have you shared your technicques with others suffering from depression? Your example could be a big help to them.

This is what is known as off label uses of a drug. A doctor will try a drug to treat a conditon for which the drug has not been tested. Unfortunatly many drugs for mental illnesses are drugs being used to treat illnesses off label. As far as I know lithium is the only drug approved to treat mania, but many anti-seizure drugs, and anti-psycotics have been successful and are commonly used to treat mania. The drug companies should be funding studies to prove the effectiveness of these drugs and get them approved and labeled for these uses.

My issue isnt necessarily witht he drugs (after all they are inanimate objects). But it is with the relationship between the doctors and the Pharmisutical companies. Money drives the misdiagnoses and the pushing of unnecessary drugs.

I had a father and a grandfather that had Parkinson's, while this is a neurological disorder, the mental illnesses came when they were placed on all the pharmakeia.

I am intimately involved with the foster care system in Texas. This system worships psychotropic medications. What these drugs do to these children is unnatural and wrong. What pains them is the evil people in their lives that harmed them in various heinous ways and the children need to be healed of that trauma not doped up. Just because Johnny or Sally are not throwing tantrums doesn't equal success, it equals a condition consistent with being stoned. Children do not need sorcery to balance their alleged chemical imbalances, they need the love of Jesus Christ and some Christian parents to show it to 'em.

Prior to my wife becoming a keeper of the home, she worked in Juvenile Probation. Legal and illegal drugs abounded within the lives of those juveniles and in my estimation none of those drugs helped those juveniles the way at least one parent who loved them would've. The best cure would've been a male parent and a female parent who trained them up in the ways of God.

There are more people on drugs in our society than ever, there are more broken families in our society than ever. The solution is not more drugs, the solution is not more psychiatry and psychology, the solution is more Holy Bible and a return to Godly two-parent, one career families.

The preceding should not be construed as a judgment upon whatever situation you're dealing with and I pray for whatever pain you are going through as a result of your loved ones illness. However, I do endorse the article contained in the original post. We have a drug culture with pharmaceutical companies who looove money and they are harming us and our posterity. The OP shows a leading "doctor" as admitting that normal children are being misdiagnosed with illnesses and demonstrates that the field of psychiatry is a subjective field.

    Rufus,

Do you believe medications have a place in the treatment of mental illnesses? I will agree that medications is sometimes (often) prescribed to quickly.

IMO there the treatment of mental illness should contain some or all of the follwoing. There will be times when medications is not needed, however in cases of sever mental illness medication is a vital component of the treatment. Medication alone will NOT be the answer.

    Jesus
    Therapy
    Family Support
    Medication.

Since Bill isn't on right now, I have to ask:

Are all drugs sorcery or just those that "alter the mind"? And where do you draw the line?

The brain is the most complex and least understood organ of the body. Therefore medical treatment of of the brain will lag behind medical treatment of other parts of the body.

Lets not forget that in times past leaches were considered a cure for almost everything, Antibotics were just moldy bread, small pox was a world wide empidemic. Thourgh medical science we now know that letting a leach bleed you simply makes you weaker, antibotics can help to cure infection, and small pox only exhists in a lab freezer.

Are medications for for mental illness the end all and cure all? NO THEY ARE NOT.

Are medications for mental illness helpful to those suffering from mental illness, YES THEY ARE.

Through futher study of mental illness can a cure be found? I PRAY THAT WILL HAPPEN.

God could cure all illnesses, but he has allowed them to happen as a consequence of our Sin. A treatment for any illness, mental or otherwise must have God as a part of it. He has provided us with Doctors, Nurses, Hospitals, X-Ray, MRI, Blood Tests, Medications, etc. to treat these illnesses. The people of Jesus's time on earth would think allmost all of our medical treatments were sorcery. However, we accept them as common every day things. Perhaps thers medications some of your think of as sorcery will someday be thought of as asprin.

I praise God for doctors and modern medicine. But even in the midst of that we need to be wise and discerning and set aside gullible tendencies.

Amen Brother. In all things we need not be led astray. Far to many people do things simply because the Doctor says so. We must ask questons and do our own reasearch so that we can make the proper decisons for our life.

I have great respect for the medical profession, but Doctors are human. They will make mistakes, a certian percentage will be incomatent, some will be easily swayed by drug compaines. That is why we need to pray for our Doctors that God will bless them with the skills and intregrity necessary for their profession.
