"Showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments."
"And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart."
"With their mouth they show much love; but their heart goeth after their coveteousness."
"He that spareth the rod hateth his son; but he that loveth his son chasteneth him early."
"If you love me, keep my commandments."
"If a man love me he will keep my words."
"For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments and his commandments are not grevious."
"This is love; that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment; that as ye have heard from the beginning ye should walk in it."
"Open rebuke is better than secret love."
"For whom the Lord loves he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth."
"As many as I love I rebuke and chasten. Be zealous therefore and repent."
So much for lawless "luv" of ungodly men who would turn the grace of God into a sin liscense.

1Corinthians 13
4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, 5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; 6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; 7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. 8 Charity never faileth:

Matthew 22:36
Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. -
For God so loved the world that He GAVE...
His ONLY Son....
Loving is a decision to care about someone else more than you care about yourself, or at least as much! -
Amen! That love is. True love causes us to keep God's commandments because when we keep God's commandments we have, in practice, loved God and our neighbor.
People who water down the word of God in the name of "luv" really don't love anyone but themselves. The are only trying to avoid being persecuted or justify their own ungodly actions.
"By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments, and his commandments are not grevious."

Mark Osgatharp </font>[/QUOTE]I appreciate your agreement, Mark, but I think you might have something a bit backwards -- it is when we love God and love others that we keep all the commandments, not the other way around. -

Helen,
It is when we keep the commandments that we love God or other people. Our love is not some feeling it is an outward action.
For example in I John where he says that the love of God was made manifest when he SENT his son to be the propitiation for our sins.
God could not have loved us apart from sending Christ into the world.
Likwise we can not have love for God or our fellow brethern apart from keeping the commandments of God. The action of keeping the commandments is the love.
Therefore it is when we keept the commandments that we have love for God, the bretern etc. -
The greeks have several words for "love" in the NT, though in English, we have only one. So we often end up reading a verse that talk about phileo (brotherly love) the same way we read a verse that talks about agapeo (complete and uncondiional love), or eros (sexual love) the same way we read a verse that talks about storge (parental love).
We need to study original texts and the author's intent when we're studying scriptures. Otherwise, we may misread and misapply it. -
I like the way Don Fransisco sang it in one of his songs.
"Love is not a feeling, it's an act of your will."
I have seen feelings find their proper place when love is practiced as an action first.
Even on bulletin boards, I find myself refraining, resisting, rethinking, retyping etc... That is many times a counter action that often goes against my initial feelings.
Know what I mean? ;)
Just thinking...

All of the posts here are true, because they are based on the scriptures.
It all goes back to Jesus:
"Greater love hath no man than this, that He lay down His life for His friends."
But His death was only effective for:
"Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you."
