Luke's use of the word "but"

Read the resurrection to Emmaus story in Luke and see how often he uses the word "but" and the subtle shades of meaning in this small, oft used and seldom studied word.

 

"But For" has legal implications in law. As in, "but for the existence of X, would Y have occurred?"
