If a company is required to give a women X weeks of paid maternity leave, guess who is going to have a harder time even getting a job. That is just the law of unintended consequences. Just like now there are million of Americans who are stuck working 29 hours because Obamacare changed the definition of full-time to 30 hours.

This is what liberals do not want to accept. So they create the laws that work against the free market and when they do not work like they want them too they demonize those who do as you suggest here and create more laws all the while robbing us of our freedoms. Always under the guise of helping someone. Its an excuse to reign in the free market which they hate.

Some regulations are sensible. Maternity leave is one of them.

I don't agree. This is an area the feds have no business snooping around.

Companies that want to offer it as a benefit, or a recruitment tool have that right.

It's just another reason to not hire young women.

Forcing a company to pay maternity leave is ridiculous. It's an unfair burden on a struggling businesses.

The federal law applies to businesses with at least 50 employees. Are they "struggling"? Usually a company of that size are not. If a woman wants to have paid maternity leave she ought to be looking at getting hired at companies with at least 50 employees or one that provides it regardless of size.

The fed has no business getting involved with this. It is unAmerican and contrary to our founding.

It is unAmerican for the government to assure mothers that they can have a minimum of 12 weeks bonding time with their newborn babies. Okey-dokey.

    Crazy, ain't it?

Because he and folks like him say so, it's suddenly "unAmerican" to care about a mother being able to spend time with her newborn.

These kids are gonna start opting to stay in the womb because they are gonna get wind that they matter so much less as a person and as a political tool to some folks once they come out the womb.

Being against this doesn't seem to be very pro-family either.

Technically, I'm with Mitch. I'm pretty sure Thomas Jefferson would not want the federal government involved in forcing companies to pay for their employees to have babies.

And most companies I know sponsor little league teams, donate to high schools, donate to the hospitals, all while paying the highest business taxes in the world. so enough about mean rich companies that hate babies.

Just curious - how many people do you employ?

and BTW - the OP is about PAID maternity leave.

So here is the situation - As an employer (of which I am no longer) I must give a person 12 weeks of leave (albeit unpaid) - so what do I do for those 12 weeks - is it as simple as hiring someone for 12 weeks? How many people want to work for only 12 weeks. I could go to a temporary employment agcy - but I will have to pay the agcy an added fee to supply someone - and if they individual does not work out.....

Now if a company wants to do so - fine .....

No one said it does, but it does compound the problem of parenthood and probably leads some women to have abortions rather than loose their jobs. What is wrong with trying to help people?

What does Christ say about helping others? What would he say about not helping others. The answer is pretty clear in the judgement scene in Matthew.

Christ is going to judge corporations and businesses ? That's news to me.

You spew pure pabulum. Christ had words for those who ignorantly judge other's giving. Just because we reject socialism doesn't mean we don't help others. Stop the lie, already.

We will be judged, individually. And not by the likes of you.

Crabby, this post makes ME crabby! :flower:

I am 110% pro-life and I am 110% FOR paid maternity leave that is brought forth by individual corporations.

WHY does paid maternity leave have to be federalized?

I know of no one who has had a baby and works who cannot get paid maternity via their employer. I have even known men to get paid paternity leave for up to 6 weeks.

Why does wanting the details of the maternity leave put into the hands of the mother and the employer mean that I don't care for the welfare of the baby after it is born or the mother after she has given birth?

I do not want the federal government's hands involved in maternity leave. That's a private business's and individual mother's private business.

So what you are saying is that if your next door neighbor has a baby, you should help support her financially since she will not be able to work?

I have an idea. Why not lower federal income taxes to 1940s levels so that women don't have to work?

I have another idea. Why not lower American corporate taxes, now the highest in the world, so that American businesses can compete and hire more people?

Why not? Because then politicians will lose some of their power. Taxing is power.
