You have high property tax rates in New Jersey because there are affluent people there? I'm not understanding. New Jersey has the 3rd highest property tax rate in the nation. Please explain the relationship between high property tax rates and affluence.
Ahh come on... everyone wanted to live here at one time because of the jobs...we had all the pharma jobs, we had At&T, we had chemical jobs... or you could always go into NY or Philadelphia and to support the infrastructure they started raising taxes and that priced out many people in home ownership etc ... this crap crescendos... building highways to address traffic, paying off unionized teachers, constantly building schools etc all adds up

So what? You have not answered my question--why are property tax rates so high in New Jersey? Payoffs to teachers? Really, that your answer? BTW, highways are not paid for with property taxes.

Why should New Jersey citizens write off their high property taxes on their federal returns? Meanwhile people from other low property tax rate states have been subsidizing New Jersey for decades.

There are lot's of public sector unions in NJ and their wages and other benefits costs money, a lot of money. The Democrats have pretty much held all the power for many years and high taxes is the normal consequence as they made extravagant deal after deal with the unions. Thankfully I left that state 40 years ago and have never looked back.

So police departments, fire departments, schools and teachers, park & rec workers, dogcatchers, etc. are the reason?

Why don't other states have the same problems?

Honestly thats a mere portion of it. Most here have become comfortable with the life style they lead. Therefore spend lavishly on schools & teachers (hang the cost) after all, its for the kids. Put in 20 cops in a small town when 6 are sufficient. Hire DPW employees when contractors are sufficient....I could go on forever. Then after you have bled people white, then you start an initiative to reevaluate the property so you can increase taxes .... looking for anything to bump up your properties worth for more revenue (this was done recently through combined Democrat & Republican initiatives ---Hint, Hint Chris Christy). All during a recessionary time frame when you really should be looking to a devaluation of the properties worth. (But you cant do that!!!)

NJ has a reputation as being the foreclosure capital of the USA, our economic posture is no longer the Go Go 80's and 90's. The high cost of everything has put us in the dumpster......so they do most people do, while here they put up with the economic rape until they decide to leave ..... then they find that out the house that the real estate people told them was $X,XXX,XXX is actually $xxx,xxx----"Ahhhh crap, I gotta take a loss....but, but, but...."

Well now the Democrats have a real solid hold in the state.....with the exception of 3 counties, its in their hands. And this guy (the New Governor) is a Goldman Boy intent on bringing in Total Gambling (I can have a slot machine in my kitchen--to quote a TV advertisement) & we can legalize pot, possibly prostitution. Time to move!

We also have another guy from Kearny NJ who recently moved to Florida. Perhaps he could shed some light on the States current situation.

Payoffs to teachers? I think school; teachers deserve every penny they're paid and more. Both my mother and aunt taught the deaf for 30 years and did more good in this life than you ever could.

You descend into sentimentality and that is something you cannot do in a public school system funded by tax payers. Let’s say, I determine that I decided to send my kids to a private school, then why do I have to pay for a public schools salary, health care and pension? Do you agree that that’s not fair or are you a perponent of bilking the taxpayer?

Most of my arguement is not directed at individual teachers but teachers unions who for so many years used the slogan “It’s for the children” ... they even made it on lawn signs to sway the liberal bleeding hearts who always voted to increase property taxes again and again and again ... then they move to Florida

Of course, you don't care about real people. I shared my personal views based on experience. Why should people attending public schools be forced to pay for private schools? That happens under the Republican train wreck they call Tax reform. BTW, I lived in Jersey for 30 years and I learned not to take any guff from people like you.

Come back here and tell me that to my face big man. And why didn’t you stay here, snip. just another hit and run liberal, take the money while it last then run. 30 years tells me you are a short timer...I’m here 61 years so I’ve paid my dues. You were probably one of the pukes who move in, raise the price of everything, promote the schools through constant property taxes and then bale out. Trust me, there are other ways to develop quality lives in NJ communities vs raising taxes to the moon you liberal.

BTW, I did not suggest that anyone but the parents pay for kids private educations that’s your pitiful untrue prouncement. Now get the wax out of your ears, what I said is why should people who send their kids to private or parochial schools have to also pay a tax on public schools? Seems fair, are you into fair or are you just another tax and spend nucklehead because if you are it is you who doesn’t care a wit for people.

I wouldn't call being there for 30 years a bail-out.I wanted to live on both coasts and then return to the South and I did that. It's a free country or used to be anyway. If you're against excellent public education you have a lot of supporters here. You are getting screwed by the Republican tax bill and I am not at least until they take away Social Security and medicare. Enjoy.
