Whether the details of the actual story (NASA and their Satellites) is true means nothing because this could be a way for the Devil to slyly sway people to discredit the Bible.
The truth means nothing?
If the story is not true, Christians become a laughingstock for believing twaddle, and it becomes a way for the Devil to slyly sway people to discredit the Bible.
Since it seems that either way the Bible loses out, I'll choose the path of not looking stupid.

Amen, Brother Ransom - Preach it!
Debby in Philly: //I have heard this one many times. I wonder
if it is an "urban legend" or if it is true.
It is an 'urban legend' at best, a sick intellegence test at worse.
O.P: //For all the scientists out there, and for all the students
who have a hard time convincing these people regarding
the truth of the Bible, here's something that shows God's
awesome creation, and that He is still in control.//
Actually the story shows no such a thing. It shows the bankruptcy
of the hyper-fundamentalist Doctrine of Ignorance which says that
God can use people who won't apply themselves to available education.
By contrast the Bible says (ed's head version)
Study to show yourself approved unto God,
a workman who needs not be ashamed.
Any scientist and students of all but the most insidious social
welfare pseudo-scientist and all but the most evil of
one-world-government political pseudo-scientist
will see right through the 'story'. It the story is just wrong on
way too many levels.
I heard this story (it circulated in chain-mail then ;) ) in 1967,
the same summer that I was taking my first computer course.
The IBM mainframe in 1967 had computing power almost equal to my
handheld FRANKLIN SPELLING ACE. {BTW, I still have one from 1988
I bought three that year and one is still working }
Note that this was prior to Scopes, so I had to figure it out for myself
that the story is a false, deceptive, lying hoax
One of the principles of Computer Science is this:
GIGO = Garbage in, garbage out - which is to say, you cannot get
any true data from junk or random data. This story requires computer
to be capable of creating truth from lies - making the computer more
powerful than God. God mearly made the universe from nothing;
I don't belive there will be a computer that can make something more
then the universe (TRUTH) from something less than nothing (lies).
Space navigation does not require that one go back some 1,000
years. Last year will be plenty.
Space navigation does not require the ploting of all points.
Intead the points are converted into formula. The formula can
be anlayzed for 'bump points. BTW, the major goal of space navigation
is to get objects nearby each other, not to avoid collision.
The universe is so empty you can fire off in most any random direction
you want to and are very unlikely to hit anything, ever. In fact, the
universe not only was created by God from nothing; but still consists
of 99.99999999999% nothing. (for all practical purposes, the Universe
consists of nothing).
Col 1:15-17 (KJV1611 Edition):]
Who is the image of the inuisible God, the first borne
of euery creature.
16 For by him were all things created that are in heauen,
and that are in earth, visible and inuisible, whether
they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers:
all things were created by him, and for him.
17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
So By Christ all things continue to exist, but they
are made mostly of nothing but Jesus ;) -
PastorMark: //For me, I'll stick with my Bible as truth every time.//
The Bible is true. The Opening Post story is false.
The falseness of the story in the opening post doesn't
even touch the TRUTH of the Bible.
Even if the Opening Post farie tale were true, it wouldn't
make the Bible even a tad more true.
The Bible doesn't need the assault that this urban
myth strikes against it. -
I think that instead of fighting to discredit this we need to realize that the devil knows enough Bible to misquote it so why not have the skills to make up a story like this. I was pointing out the fact that this is just a tact of the devil to have not only the world to discredit us but us inadvertantly "discrediting" ourselves. I like to use this 'hoaxes' as tool not to confuse people but as a opening with my co-workers to share with them the TRUTH.
Does this clarify my position more?? Good...onto another thread -

I never said the truth meant nothing.
You said, and I quote: "Whether the details of the actual story (NASA and their Satellites) is true means nothing." Whether the details are true or not, is itself a matter of truth.

Do you think we avoid discrediting ourselves by allowing tall tales to circulate?
I like to use this 'hoaxes' as tool not to confuse people but as a opening with my co-workers to share with them the TRUTH.
I hope you start with the truth that the NASA hoax is a fairy tale.
