Looks like there is a new round of registration fraud in CA. This time it is a Republican leaning group caught in the act. They also paid workers per registration card
This article made me think of something else, how can it be illegal to turn in multiple registration cards? If I want to change parties I submit a new card. If I change address I submit a new card. If I get married and change my name I submit a new card. There are many people submitting multiple cards for various reasons. If I move 73 times I will need to submit 73 cards to keep my address updated. The last card you submit is the only one that counts.
I think, in the sense you mentioned, you're correct.
However, this close to an election..... one should not have to change their registration card not address more that once without it becoming
questionable.
What I wonder about is how do out of state students, paying out of state fees, because of their out of state residency, get to register in state and vote in local as well as national elections?
It would seem that a means to register in their home state and vote by absentee ballot would be expected of them like it is for other 'transients'.
Woke up on a different note, it must have to do with intent that makes this worth investigating. If your intent is to change your address then no harm no foul. If your intent is to deceive or sway the lection then we must have a crime.
I was wondering this also, it has to do with some states residency laws. I am seeing that some states have different criteria for being considered a resident. I think this tactic is only possible in certain states but not all. OH must be one but I need to verify this before I say for sure.
I'm doing more reading on this, but I truly can't find where this is a crime. It is clearly a crime to vote 73 times but one can registar until they feel tired of registering.
The only reason I pointed out this article was to say McCain can't seem to buy a break in this election. Joe the plumber, ACORN, everything tried just seems to fall apart under scrutiny.
It is being said this is the same republican tactic that got the US attorney's fired and that situation is still under scrutny also. No one in the DOJ is confesing to who ordered the FBI to get involved. I would leave the jury out on FBI involvement = a crime has been committed.
I can't speak for other states, but in my state, or perhaps I should say, in my locality, when i go to register, an inquiry is asked if I've previously registered at another address, and if so, to give that address or precinct, county and state.
When I sign the oath whcih completes the registration, I am certifying by my signature that the information which I've given is current and correct, that my residency qualifys me to vote here and no other, under penalty of law.
...... I'm not real certain about all these particulars.....as I'm expressing this as I remember from a few years back when I moved from one county to the adjoining county.
Interestingly enough, after making my move and changing my registration, where upon I received my new and current registration card, about 6 months later I received a voters card for my old precinct in the other county which was forwarded by mail/address change on file at the post office.
(At that time I still had property in the other county at the same address.... but was no longer 'homesteading' there.)
A simple phone call corrected their records (as far as I know).
Voter's registration is supposed to be like a driver's license:
You can only have one 'current' at the time, and to exercise your rights and privileges under any others is violating the law.
However, the DMV is better funded than the office of elections and the efficiency of the later leaves much to be desired.
I checked out our counties rules and they require you send in a new card or stop by an office no less than 30 days before the election. You can vote in the early voting but your vote will not be counted until Nov 4th. I would have to sign an oath but so did all these people.
They had a footnote which basically said if you're not sure you're registered, register again to be safe.
I still say the problem here had to be intent because I don't see anything wrong with sending in multiple cards. Now putting Mickey Mouse on a card then signing the oath is something different all together.
