Why must we demonize everyone with whom we disagree? The recent tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary has awaken this issue as the 2nd Ammendment (NRA) and the Gun Control Advocates are preparing for the next war of words. This holds true in almost any subject or issue that comes up for discussion. I have friends and fellow believers that are what we label as moderates or liberals who have a different viewpoint on a lot of social and political issues which differ from mine who are good Christian people and good citizens of the community. This practice is never more evident then on the BB

I am not sure the people get demonized as it is that views get demonized. There are unfortunate times when personal attacks take place. But demonizing views is far different than demonizing people.
I will always demonize the view that Planned Parenthood should be able to continue to do business.
I will always demonize socialism and liberalism.
These views and many others are not just another view and not just a different view, they are evil and not legitimate views that should be given an ounce of credibility. They need to be refuted and defeated. Period. -

Rev Mitchell brings up an excellent point. I am as guilty as anyone. If we could learn to attack the idea and not the person, we would see a lot less hostility on the board and a lot less people banned.

Debate tactics are what creates the hostility. Wanting to be right and win a debate at any cost. -
Yes, there are several reasons why discussions are shifted from what an opponent says, to the ignorance, arrogance, mean spirited behavior, and outright dishonest behavior of the opponent. Far easier to trade insults then present God's truth. Another reason is, if you do not have the truth on your side, is to undercut the truth by disparaging the messenger. Claims of mind reading are quite common on this board, i.e. the opponent is knowingly misrepresenting scripture.
One I am quite often guilty of is saying the other guy cannot read, because he or she does not read a verse or passage the way I and several commentaries read it. -
What I am saying is, take this post for example, several months ago I might have taken it personally and lobbed one back. However, I know you are an honest person that speaks his mind, and our status as brothers in Christ does not change whether we agree or disagree. -

I find the "it'll never happen here" idea a little disturbing. It's just when people get lulled into a false sense of security that the unthinkable becomes possible.

I believe the gun issue is one Christians can disagree on, and should be able to without making the other side feel stupid.
I see good points on both sides of the issue. In Texas, they have low crime, because lots of people carry guns...however, my Brother (nurse, non-military) owns an AK-47 and several accessories for it. He likes to shoot it at the shotting range, and I see no need for a gun like that. It Just makes him feel cool.
Personally, I don't own any guns, but don't mind going shooting with my family members and friends occasionally. -

But the reason I'm saying it won't happen here is because of what I see all around me at present.
Back in the late 60's then President Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines massacred 20 Filipino muslims when his plans to do a Bay of Pigs type of operation against Malaysia was aborted. He wanted no witnesses. The result ? over 40 years of muslim secessionist revolution on top of an ongoing communist insurgency. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kz1KiaLugA
Last September, the narcissistic tenant at the White House, aided by the concussed Secretary of State, allowed the massacre of his ambassador and three other brave Americans at Libya, and then, with the complicity of American liberal media, pointed the blame at some stupid anti-Muslim film, which thanks to the reporting of ONE major media outlet, was debunked.
Where are the crowds demonstrating indignantly about Benghazi ?
That guy was a virtual unknown up until 2007, he ran with NO PLATFORM, just a slogan: change. How long has it been since his administration passed a budget ? what new laws has he signed into effect ? Like Mr. Marcos, the dictator who ruled by presidential decree, Obummer rules this republic with executive decrees.
Where are the crowds chanting ?
Now, this same fellow, a NON-ACHIEVER, ran again without any clear platform, other than that we're nearing a fiscal cliff, and bested a clearly popular candidate, an evidently much, much better one for America (with the exception of Ron Paul as far as I'm concerned), who threw in the towel quite readily, and within 24 hours was going about his business, loading gas in some California gas station, like, "whew, am I glad that is over" !
Where are the indignant crowds who SHOULD HAVE peaceably assembled and DEMANDED an investigation into the reported anomalies ? Where are the flag-waving, slogan-shouting patriots who SHOULD BE demanding a documented report that OUR TROOPS OVERSEAS who lay their lives on the line daily so we can democratically and fairly select a leader have themselves been afforded that privilege of practicing what they fight for us to enjoy?
Now, he wants our guns, and he's got his eyes set on the 2nd ammendment, and the Muslim Brotherhood holds good positions in his administration, and some sinister lady in the background other than his wife runs the country, and where are the crowds ?
Nowhere.
Now, if we can't even peacefully assemble to demand what rightfully needs answers, how can "it" happen here ? -

Or, I could be wrong and the culture of apathy is being used by God to get America out of the way for prophetic events to come.
In any case, it is for sure a spiritual issue.
