Religious Fundamentalism is not the reason Jesus treated Pharisees different from other sinners.
The differences is the people Jesus treated with love knew they had done wrong and did not reject Jesus.
Jesus told the woman to sin no more, she didn't tell him that he has a demon or that he's a bigot.
Sorry, I totally disagree. The fundamentalists of his day misused religion, they misused God, to appear superior to others and to condemn others who dared disagree with them. Fundamentalism in all religions appears to be pretty much the same animal. Intolerance and condemnation for others, superiority for themselves.
Yes, Jesus told the woman to sin no more. Does his response tell us anything about how we should treat others?
Should we respond to them with aggressive condemnation or with love, patience, empathy and friendship?
Jesus responded with aggressive condemnation to the Pharisees.
You can say it's because of religious fundamentalism, but whatever the reason, that's how Jesus treated them because they were unrepentant sinners.
And like I said, he condemned the fundamentalists of his day. Fundamentalists of all ages and all religious should read that with fear and trembling. It is the attitude that Christ condemns and it is the attitude we see so often here on this BB.
The rich young ruler was unrepentant, but Christ did not condemn him or call his names.
Just stepping in for a moment-
"fundamentalists"
may not be the best word to use.
How about
"Zealot"
(noun -
A person who is fanatical and uncompromising in pursuit of their religious, political, or other ideals.)
You do err, not knowing the scriptures. Acts 10:43 "To him (Christ) give all the (Old Testament) prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins."
It is not my place to make judgments that should be left to God. My responsibility and goal is to live a Christ-like life here and now. My worry is about myself.
You libel Fundamentalists and you mispresent Jesus when you say he condemned the Fundamentalists of his day.
Jesus condemned people who refused to obey God's laws and who also rejected Him. You are also wrong about the Rich young ruler.
He said he kept all the law (unlike the Pharisees) and Jesus implicitly agreed.
Jesus told him to give his possession to the poor and he left sad.
He left sad because it was a hard teaching that he intended to follow.
If he had rejected Jesus, he wouldn't have been sad because he would have just dismissed what Jesus said.
The reason Jesus didn't show hate for non-religious evil people is because they're irrelevant.
The status of Jesus as Christ is purely religious.
I think I disagree because in reality the pharisees were not the fundamentalists of their day.If they were fundamentalists then they would not have been looking for so many ways to circumvent the law of Moses. I guess that is what you are saying. I agree that the rich young ruler is a better example of a fundamentalists as he did try to keep the commandments. Notice though that Jesus did not answer the rich young rulers question "What must I do to inherit eternal life"? rather in the implied answer He said "If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me" I believe the rich young ruler already had a place reserved for him in heaven. Jesus knowing that wanted even more for the young man - "treasure in heaven" as well. Not so much because he kept the commandments but that his faith in the messiah and his belief in the God of Israel preceded the following of the commandments.
OK guys - we are getting way off
