Nuclear waste….what a waste!...?

I am from an area that is dependent, to an extent, on nuclear materials.

There is a debate about shipping the waste from SRS to New Mexico (the Government shipped waste to SRS for the MOX project and then canceled the MOX project, leaving the state with the waste).

What are the economic factors involved? I know there is a pit program in process to replace the MOX project, but what are the pros and cons of removing the materials (are there any pros for the gaining facilities, or only problems)?

I dont really understand the problem with the SRS. Its my understanding that "nuclear wase" is not the problem at SRS. The "problem" is that there is a massive amount of weapons grade plutonium being stored there. In my opinion, having a mass supply of weapons grade plutonium ready to immediately manufacture into nuclear warheads is an asset, not a liability. Especially considering the emerging Chinese threat, we dont need to be disposing of anything.

This video says that spent fuel is used as a "silver bullet" by the M1 Abrams tank:

Depleted uranium is used to make A.P. ammo. Depleted Uranium is an entire different animal than weapons grade plutonium. It's kind of like comparing a runny nose to the Aids, Hep C, Beubonic plague, scabies.

It's all over my head but the video does say that the Abrams fires a shell made of depleted uranium, a by-product of nuclear reactors, so I am wondering if this is the sort of waste that is the subject of this thread?

No. It's totally different stuff. You get depleted uranium in making weapons grade plutonium. (And other ways)

Yea, especially since the new gen4 reactors burn spent nuclear fuel. And, are failsafe.

Pandora's Promise.
That was the MOX project. The government sent nuclear materials here to be converted to MOX fuel but terminated the project (the fuel was too expensive to produce and it'd only work in fast reactors....more expense).

That left SC stuck with the materials. The government was ordered to remove an amount by specific dates (I think they were looking at NM).

Last I read the old MOX facility was being converted to a pit facility.

The point is we should be going NUCLEAR for electricity, full bore, like France. The technology is there for safe practical clean energy. The environmental extremists are seriously distorting the truth concerning NUCLEAR energy. ROKU has the documentary Pandora's Promise. It really is enlightening, produced by former anti-NUCLEAR folks now staunchly pro-NUCLEAR.

I don't know about that. The failed nuclear project in SC about bankrupted all the utilities in the State.
Georgia Power may very well fail to get the new reactor at Vogul online. If that happens, it's going to near bankrupt GA Power, MEAG, and the EMCs.
