For persons experiencing number dysphoria (a state of unease and general satisfaction of the assigned number of upper appendages; i.e., arms), number reassignment surgery is considered medically appropriate when the following are met:

Individual is 18 years or older
Individual has the capacity to make a fully informed consent to treatment
Documentation shows persistent and well documented number dysphoria as evidenced by ALL of the following:
  • The condition is associated with clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.
  • A marked incongruence between one’s experienced/expressed number of appendages and assigned number, of at least 6 months duration, as manifested by TWO OR MORE of the following:
  • A marked incongruence between one’s experienced/expressed number of appendages and primary and/or secondary limb characteristics
  • A strong desire to be rid of one’s primary and/or secondary number of appendages because of a marked incongruence with one’s experienced/expressed number or appendages
  • A strong desire for the primary and/or secondary appendage characteristics of another number
  • A strong desire to be of another number of appendages
  • A strong desire to be treated as having the other number of appendages

I'm sure others have thought of and/or discussed this, but this just struck me yesterday when I heard a program about LGBTQ, gender reassignment, and a few other related things. While apparently quite a few doctors are willing to perform, and several insurers will pay for, gender reassignment surgery, how many doctors would amputate an arm or a leg because the person thought they were one-armed or one-legged?

The things in the first post are roughly based on the online Medical Policy Manual of BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee.

We have legitimized mental illness, and given it priority over reality.

It's difficult to think where this priority will lead us!!

One thing we may not be far from is that reference to any thing like this as mental illness will be hate speech.

Reminds me of 16 years ago, when the wife was working as a CNA in a nursing home. She said that even though going along with someone's dementia might make things easier in the short term, the rule was to always present reality.

Hmm, it might also work the other way.

One may desire 8 total appendages in the event that the individual 's desire is to be an insect.

In Canada, I have read recently that it is now hate speech to portray the LGBTQ community in a negative light. The law is that they have the same protected status as the black community or the Jews.

It seems as if we are going in the direction that any group of people thought to be OK will have total protection against being portrayed in a negative light. Everyone else is gator meat. Of course, don't expect Christians to be one of the OK groups. The world seems to increasingly think we are as bad as the worst criminals.
