What your thinking of is laissez fare capitalism. Survival of the fittest as you put it, can be prone to imbalance and a cause of monopoly power. This is most significant where high cost presents a major barrier to entry.
Some government oversight can be beneficial in assuring balanced competition, particularly for basic necessities where absence of regulation could lead to exploitation.
Is there any practical difference in the impact to personal freedom between exploitative monopoly power, and excessive governmental taxation?
You are the first person I've come across who seems to use the term 'robber baron' in a positive context. There certainly may be cases where 'industrial statesmen' can be acknowledged, but I would be naive to attribute such altruism to many mega-corporations.

I remember when I was a kid how my grandfather, and others of course, were paid by the coal companies partly in cash and partly in script. Script could only be used to buy things from the company store. The entire system of set up by the coal companies was to benefit the company, not the miner. The coal companies owned company houses where many miners lived. If a miner was hurt or killed the company would throw them out of the company home with no help, no medical care ... "no nothing".
Those were the bad old days. For anyone not familiar with this sad era read the history of the coal field wars. -

I'm just a dumb hillbilly. I guess I don't understand the difference between communism, socialism, Marxism, and all the little details y'all quibble over. All I know is that the current political powers here in the USA are anti-God, anti-American, and anti-constitution. Does it really matter what "label" we put on it? You can put lipstick on a pig and call it whatever you want, but it's still a pig.

The most dangerous "ism" in the world today is globalism. As it can use all of the other "isms" to further it's agenda for a one world government.
Globalists like the pig (Sus scrofa domesticus) come in many forms and are as highly adaptable as the wild pig.
Globalists prey mainly on sheople. Sheople are basically those people who are so lost in the false left vs right paradigm they cannot see that the global financial and corporate elite own both major parties and control both sides of a false debate. They own and control all of the information centers and can and do manipulate public opinion to gain consent for their Anti - God, Anti - American, Anti - Constitution, Anti - Human New World Order.
