Pardon the cynic in me, but the date of August 31, 2010, puts us right in the middle of the midterm elections.
Plus this little blurb, almost halfway down the page....
... And after combat forces withdraw, 35,000 to 50,000 will stay behind for an additional year and half of support and counterterrorism duties.
Am I the only one who doesn't trust this guy ?

It's probably just coincidence, Bro. Curtis.
He ran on a 16 month time table and this is pretty close to that.
It is being presented as a compromise with the generals.
It will be interesting how the left wing haters of our forces in Iraq will respond to leaving 50,000 there and having additional troops going to Afganistan, which is looking more and more like a quagmire.
I suspect some will turn on Obama, but most will toe the line.
peace to you:praying:

50 to 60 thousand troops being left hardly sounds like a pullout.

But they're not combat troops...they're "advisors".
See the difference?

If memory serves me right, he has always said he was going to leave a substantial sized force in Iraq.
His rabid anti war supporters just never listened to him when he hedged on his imagined committments.

I don't think it's a matter of trusting Obama since his troop level decisions are made based on his commanders input. I am concerned about the size of the force they are expecting to remain after the "war". It says to me things are not as good in Iraq as we are being told. Expecting to need that many troops 1.5 years from now means things are not good at all right now.

It sure has him on the hot seat with the Democrats. They are not going along with this. They don't understand or agree with that 50K residual force.

We had fewer than that in Afghanistan and called it a war.

Don't forget the potable water units and the band. Someone had to play hail to the chief if Obama goes over there.
