As much as I disagree with Osteen and the Emergent movement, I will give Osteen a high five for at least promoting unity, which seems to be terribly lacking in fundamentalism, and as shown in this board.
I will not promote Osteen on my web ministry CERM, however I do give him credit for promoting unity. Fundamentalists for the most part divide against everyone and everything.
No wonder that pastor in Washington has chosen seperation. I bet he has asked for help before, and gotten slammed or ignored.

unity at the price of doctrine is not Godly unity.
There are actually quite a few things that we are supposed to separate over.....and some of them include separating from Christian brothers for a time. -

Perhaps a better student of history can help me out here, but wasn't a large part of the Modernism v Fundamentalism debate at the turn of the 20th cent over unity? Machen's book "Christianity & Liberalism" talks about how liberal churches just wanted to promote unity, even to the point of uniting with pagans.
Contrast Mr. Oesteen with the Together for The Gospel 4 - Mohler, Mahaney, Duncan and Dever. They come from different denominations yet unite on what the true gospel is. They also published a document that shows their understanding of the true gospel, and are willing to be united with anyone who affirms it. -

I agree with all the responses so far.
I am unified with the members of this board against unity at the expense of sound doctrine.
Joseph Botwinick -
Does another of them involve the selection of diapers in the nursery?
Does another of them involve the personality of the preacher even though he boldly preaches the gospel, teaches it well, and loves people. -
I never slammed anyone. -
What evidence do you have that Osteen does not preach sound doctrine?
Sure I disagree with the Emergent movement, and I agree that his sermons are lacking in substance.
Thats why when I talked on the BAM I mentioned thta his sermons were excellent for a elementary milky level. -
Osteens doctrine
Show me the false doctrine here.
But yes I do agree that his sermons are absent of meat. However unlike some I believe thta Osteen is saved.
Even Hank Hanegraaf does as well. I called and spoke with Hank twice about Osteen, and he said once that Osteen is saved.
WE BELIEVE…the entire Bible is inspired by God, without error and the authority on which we base our faith, conduct and doctrine.
WE BELIEVE…in one God who exists in three distinct persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We believe Jesus Christ is the Son of God who came to this earth as Savior of the world.
WE BELIEVE…Jesus died on the cross and shed His blood for our sins. We believe that salvation is found by placing our faith in what Jesus did for us on the cross. We believe Jesus rose from the dead and is coming again.
WE BELIEVE…water baptism is a symbol of the cleansing power of the blood of Christ and a testimony to our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
WE BELIEVE…in the regular taking of Communion as an act of remembering what the Lord Jesus did for us on the cross.
WE BELIEVE…every believer should be in a growing relationship with Jesus by obeying God’s Word, yielding to the Holy Spirit and by being conformed to the image of Christ.
WE BELIEVE…as children of God, we are overcomers and more than conquerors and God intends for each of us to experience the abundant life He has in store for us. -
I am not going to question Osteen's salvation, but his sermons are so absent of meat that they are devoid of biblical content.
So add me to the unity movement. I am unified with those who soundly, boldly, clearly, without apology preach the gospel.
And I saw him on Larry King. I was embarrassed at his lack of testimony. -
I agree with you. But some here and some on the Internet call Osteen a S. terrorist. I love the man and never will bunch him in with WOF theology. However I will bunch him in with the Emergent movement.
Joel Osteen will never be exposed on CERM as long as I am in charge. -
But I don't know any Fundamentalists who have separated over these things.
I know STORIES of church people getting in fights with each other over dumb little things like the above, and then leaving the church. But that's not Biblical separation, thats a temper tantrum.
:) -
Osteen is ashamed of the gospel. Some girl on "The View" stood up for God while Osteen just sat there with his head hanging down, mutterring over and over "I don't believe in judging people".
-
As for Machen, he was great and his book Christianity and Liberalism really spells it out! They couldnt take it though and fired him from Princeton for standing by God's truth and not backing down to them! Wonderful book! -
Unity
Unity at the price of sound doctrine is called 'compromise'!
Compromise, as in that 'lukewarm' church that couldnt take a stand in Revelation. They will be spewed from His mouth!! -
NateT,
the problem is that Biblical separation is not confined to the salvation issue. We are told to also separate when a person is not obeying the words of God in general.....
1Ti 6:3
If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
1Ti 6:4
He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,
1Ti 6:5
Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.
I don't actually know much about Osteen specifically, so Im speaking generally here. -
Nevertheless I am willing to bet you money that some church out there at soemtime has split over the color of the diapers used in the nursery.
