No.
Last time I checked God and I could communicate just fine using English. -
My computer won't let me open polls anymore, that javascript thing.
But the snwer is no, God gave me a tongue and a language to talk to Him in, He understands no matter what language I speak, what He understands is what comes from my heart, doesn't matter what language it is in when it come sout of my mouth. -
i do have a couple friends that do pray in tongues because they know it is a gift that God has given them. and they know what they are saying to God too. i dont understand how or what or anything about it. but it is neat. just like David and the Psalms... God breathed scripture... and God spoke through David to write the Psalms, and the Psalms are all about God. its quite wonderful. i find it fascinating when people speak in tongues... but there needs to be an interpreter if someone is going to speak i tongues... what my couple of friends pray in tongues, they know what it means, and its all to God.

Yes, I speak in a tongue. The English tongue. ;)

i dont know why they do what they do... but its Gods gift to them, so they are using it...
do you people have a problem with other people praying to God in tongues or something? it sure seems like it... -
No, the manner in which any person worships or prays to God in private prayer is their own business, and His. What is the reason, though, for even telling that you pray to God in a tongue you understand, and you know that He understands, unless you are trying to boast of your own godliness?

If I believed the gift of tongues was still upon us, the only reason I would believe it is when it is being used how it was used Biblically.
The ability to speak and be heard in each tongue was to spread the gospel to a lot of different languages in a short period of time.
Last I checked, God can understand English (and any other tongue) just fine. So there's absolutely no reason for it. -
Voted "Let me clarify." Was going to vote "No", but it wasn't in caps and didn't have at least 15 exclamation marks after it...

kubel. you said
"If i believed the gift of tongues was still upon us..."
what do you mean by that? that none of us have the gift of tongues? or what? im a little confused -

Is it praying in tongues if I admit that I have prayed in Swahili while on a mission trip to Kenya?
-
Do you normally pray in Swahili when you are praying to God?
and how did you know you were praying in Swahili?
see the prayer language is something far beyond and extremely different then what anyone has actually posted on this board - and is also different then speaking in tongues.
I'm not so bold nor foolish to claim that I have done so - Im only bold and foolish enough to claim that I know what it is. -
Today's use (and abuse) of "tongues" is so very, very sad. Does anyone even know what it is/was?
"Tongues" was the supernatural ability granted in the NT to allow believers to communicate with non-believers who did not share a common language with the believers. Not ecstatic gibberish. Not a "private prayer language".
I believe that the biblical gift of languages is still in operation today. But not in the many churches who place such a high standard on th epublic exhibition of such nonsense as what is portrayed every time the doors are open.
Such are the days in which we live... much to the chagrin of the church...

Aren't the gift of Tongues and private prayer language two different things? Just asking.
