Record number of Americans using food stamps: report
Wed Dec 3, 2008 6:22pm EST
By Roberta Rampton
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Food stamps, the main U.S. antihunger program which helps the needy buy food, set a record in September as more than 31.5 million Americans used the program -- up 17 percent from a year ago, according to government data.
The number of people using food stamps in September surpassed the previous peak of 29.85 million seen in November 2005 when victims of hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma received emergency benefits, said Jean Daniel of the USDA's Food and Nutrition Service.
September's tally -- the latest month available -- was also boosted by hurricane and flood aid, Daniel said on Wednesday.
But anti-hunger groups said the economic downturn is the main reason behind the higher figures.
"It's a disturbing trend," said Ellen Vollinger, legal director with the Food Research and Action Center. She said she expects more people will turn to food stamps as unemployment figures rise and the economy remains weak.

Now Ken, there you go with facts. You know there is no recession because folks stampeded a Walmert. All the Walmarts here have food, I wonder if the stampeder's had food stamps...

They interviewed a super-salesman who, believe it or not, is advisting numerous customers that they should not buy a car now ... he is telling them to save their money for their kids education and to some to save it to buy groceries.
Food banks are reporting record numbers of people showing up for food.
Times are tough and probably will get tougher. -
Once the banks, housing and auto industry collapse, we can wait on free market capitalism to allow the workers and their young children to starve and sleep on the streets so we can then brag about good government responsibility because the deficit that we'll never pay didn't go up.
Like the guy who built the concrete vault with no doors or windows. He starved to death but he was never robbed.
Don't worry if your members start putting food stamps in the offering plate, the economy is sound and free market will fix itself... -
That deficit?
You act as if if everyone isn't dirt poor no one is. in reality, if you have a reality, you have no idea. -
So other presidents must have run up the current deficit.
Now Obama honestly admits he will raise the deficit but you condemn him because he will do what the previous presidents did except he was honest and said he was going to do it.
So in the end, you are upset with Obama for being honest and telling us what he would do...
So honesty = bad...
Interesting...
Now you say Christians ought to care about the unborn, shouldn't we also care about the been born? Or do we now pick and choose Christian causes for which to advocate?
Also, I see you're still calling Jim an atheist. That's sure a Christian thing to do. Why do we need satan if the Christian's condemn each other? -
Now that he's on the recession bandwagon, KenH will spam the board continually with the bad news.
Like he did for a while when lots of Americans were dying in Iraq.
Then we won in Iraq and he's been quiet about it ever since.
Maybe that's a good sign. -
Much to my regret and shame, I will have to join those on food stamps if I want to continue eating--if I can even get the help. Of course, I could stand to lose about 30 pounds. I have way more medical bills than I can pay, and some of them have been turned into collection. The stress is getting really bad. My retirement that was already too small was recently cut $345 per month, and I am HURTING financially.
If I was of a "minority" group or non-American, I'm sure I would have no problem getting help. However, I'm white and American and have very little chance of getting any help. -
Suppose the Govt cut off all food stamps. Do you think people would starve.
I think not. Food pantrys might have an increase, other social agys would have additional clients.
But some might actually cut off cable, , cut down their driving, may give up going to that $50 concert and ect, ect, ect.
Some would actually have to stop buying steaks. No more buing junk food in the C-Store.
There is just too much waste when it comes to food.
My wife is a sub teacher in public schools. She cannot believe how much food is thrown away by the kids. The vast majority are on free lunches.
Wasnt it Capt John Smith who said, "You dont work, you dont eat". -

God said it first -
Before the bailout we had a fiat money system backing an unsustainable economy based upon debt... individual, corporate, national and international, run by bankers for bankers.
Then Washington succumbed to the influence of advice, given by the very people who were cuppable, and both Presidential candidates agreed with the present administration to bailout banking and insurance (both of which have been the biggest sources of scammers in the past).
The fundamentals which existed before the bailout... would have required that these bankers to come up with solutions which would have included the whole economy if Washington with the aid of a campaign of fear and dread and an election had not caved in. Obama, McCain, and Bush were all in agreement.... and as influenctial as each was...... they share responsibility for the hasty fire sale which the Legislature completed in one week..... and made promises to us that they included oversight which they did not.
By the bailout, they protected the very crooked institutions which were major players in this present economy...... while leaving the citizens and business and industry to fend for itself: Had these major institutions been required to work out their own solutions.... then that process would have trickeled through the whole economy as they corrected their own corrupt practices. We still would have had much trouble in our economy.... but inclusion of the major culprits in the pain would have placed pressure on them to work harder on the repair which would be necessary to save their own skins as well.
We've been duped! -
Maybe you equate your Christian love to government control and responsibility over people: I equate Christian love to preaching the gospel and leading people to the freedom they have in Christ Jesus. When people are free to choose.... and they are powered by their faith and reliance upon God and his direction through their difficulties, and their resources are not stolen by the government for its own agenda...and those of forces running it..... then God can lead us to recovery.
Governments don't do this: It's not their purpose. -
If you are referring to some comment in another thread.... then that is where you should post or if it's closed but unfinished business between you and another poster...then post a reference.
Where is your own credibility?
These kind of attacks are wrong.
It's just wrong to falsely accuse on a BaptistBoard!:tonofbricks: -

I don't think race would matter when it comes to getting help. But if I can help just let me know. -

42 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:
43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.
44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?
45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.
46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal. -
