Hello,
I'm beginning a study on Wed nights on Baptist History and I have several standard books on the subject. One problem I've discovered is that I have two or three that aren’t accurate.
Would anyone here have a list of Baptist History books they could recommend?
Thanks,

The Baptist Heritage by Leon McBeth
-
I've used The Baptist Heritage as a resource for college level history courses in a secular environment, it is that good and that accurate.
-
You can also get the companion to it (I don't own it personally) that has a large selection of the primary documents cited in the main work.
-
Now that I've read your profile, you might not like that book. It's not landmarkist.
-
A third vote for The Baptist Heritage (and I do have the companion book, which is interesting.) Robert Torbet's A History of the Baptists is also good. An older, but interesting work is Thomas Armitage's A History of the Baptists.
David Benedict's A General History of the Baptist Denomination in America has some valuable information, and a wealth of detail, about early American Baptist history. -
Thx for the recommendations.
BTW, I am NOT a Landmarker.

This might be information overload for the purposes of Reformed Mike's Wed. night study, but if anyone is interested in doing primary research on Baptist history, Dr. Larry Oats of Maranatha Baptist Bible College has produced a wonderful CD called "Classic Baptist Books" with over a hundred historical books on it. Check it out at CLASSIC BAPTIST BOOKS
God bless.

I would also add Henry Vedders, History of the Baptists as well as William Estep's, The Anabaptist Story that draws a spiritual kinship connection with the Radical Reformers and the Baptist movement.

John T. Christian's two volume History of the Baptists. It isn't perfect, but it's the best there is.
Another book by David Benedict that is interesting, but might be a little hard to find, is Fifty Years Among The Baptists. It chronicles the changes that took place among American Baptists during the 19th century.
Stay away from McBeth's book - it is strongly slanted toward modernism and liberalism.
