ESV Permanent Text Edition (2016) [LINK]
Word Changes (52 Total)
Beginning in the summer of 2016, the text of the ESV Bible will remain unchanged in all future editions printed and published by Crossway—in much the same way that the King James Version (KJV) has remained unchanged ever since the final KJV text was established almost 250 years ago (in 1769). This decision was made unanimously by the Crossway Board of Directors and the ESV Translation Oversight Committee. All future Crossway editions of the ESV, therefore, will contain the Permanent Text of the ESV Bible—unchanged throughout the life of the copyright, in perpetuity.

They will come to regret their decision. I had thought with their slow incremental revisions that they would gradually be on a par with the NIV. So it will be destined to remain in the also-rans. Pity.
That goes into the question of just when though should a version been revisited again for revision? My take is when there have been really a significant amount of material to be used that was unable to access before...
Such as when the Kjv translation was done, so much more material available to us today in regards to lexicons, dictionaries, sources etc than what they had to work with!
With the current state of bible research at this time, should be able to 'freeze" any good transation for quite awhile now!
Crossway paid the liberal National Council of Churches a hefty sum to tinker with their Revised Standard Version to produce the ESV.
It started with a ten year deal.
Perhaps this means an end to the troubling situation whereby evangelical readers have been unwittingly bankrolling the NCC.
Perhaps not every time, but if the translators believe that the CT is reconstructing the original readings and if the updates bring it closer. Then a translation team should leave their translation "unfrozen" so they can go with the reading that has the strongest support. If the ESV was based on the MT or TR they would have better justification with freezing to.
The ESV is my primary text. I'm not trashing the translation. I just see nothing gained by the move.
I wasn't trying to claim it was the only factor. To me it is the biggest factor though. As far as the English goes.....I be no issue with the NKJV either. I find it to be a good translation. Outside of D.A. Carson's new Zondervan Study Bible I bought, I have only bought NKJV, ESV, and NASB Bibles in the last couple of years. I have no issue with the English they use.
I have downloaded other translations digitally from Olive Tree, but they were free.
Isn't it better though to me more accrate to what the original texts intended/meant for us to have from God, with some troubling wordings at times, to having a
really easy to read translation that might miss the mark at times?
Maybe the NESV will be based on the NRSV.
Time will tell.
Or the RESV will be based MT.
In any event perhaps it is the love of money that drives the idea of freezing a version so a new version must be bought.
Sort of the the NIV folks refusing to resupply the older NIV.
