I'm not usually one to bring up previous thread that was closed but this one deserves another look.

Rick Warren needs money
[Clips from a letter from Rick Warren]
Wednesday, December 30, 2009

With 10% of our church family out of work due to the recession, our expenses in caring for our community in 2009 rose dramatically while our income stagnated. Still, with wise management, we've stayed close to our budget all year. Then... this last weekend the bottom dropped out.

On the last weekend of 2009, our total offerings were less than half of what we normally receive - leaving us $900,000 in the red for the year, unless you help make up the difference today and tomorrow.

Well here is the church's response:

Calif. pastor Rick Warren gets $2.4M in donations [LINK]

LAKE FOREST, Calif. (AP) — Evangelical pastor Rick Warren's plea for donations to fill a $900,000 deficit at his Southern California megachurch brought in $2.4 million, Warren announced to cheers during a sermon at the church on Saturday.

Warren said the amount raised after the appeal was posted online Wednesday included only money parishioners brought in person to Saddleback Church by New Year's Eve. More was arriving by hand and by mail, he said.

"This is pretty amazing," said Warren, who made the announcement by bringing out 24 volunteers each holding a sign for $100,000. "I don't think any church has gotten a cash offering like that off a letter."

The pastor said he planned to talk about what he called his church's "radical generosity" in the rest of the weekend's sermons. He said the total came from members, and the donations were all under $100.

A wonderful, Gospel centered church full of God glorifying, Christ honoring people.

I am thankful for this church.

Gee, I was given a hard time for saying he needed money. Your article says it was a personal "plea".

$2.4 million. Lots of money.

Praise God for the generosity and faithfulness of His people. I hope that they can continue to do great things with their finances.

It all seems rather unremarkable to me. First, without knowing the budget or the income/expenses report, it's hard to imagine how one poor Sunday would scuttle the church. Second, however, in my experience it is not unusual for people to bring in end of the year offerings in order to catch up with their commitments and get their tax deductions in order. An offering that is proportionately large at the end of the year is nothing new ... and I rather suspect that it is just that everything at Saddleback is so supersized that this offering looks so large.

Actually if most offerings were $100 or less, I do not see a whole lot of extra generosity there. If I were to be a little cynical, I could say that most people just chipped in a little but did not feel the urgency implied in the letter.

I also join with those who object to the media terming this "Rick Warren receiving ...". Not Warren, his church. The two are not identical. Too much of the world thinks that pastors have full discretion over the money given to their churches; in my experience, most do not have any at all! It seemed to me when I was a pastor that I had to get permission to buy a pencil or a postage stamp!
