How about a national campaign to cut oil imports by discouraging Sunday shopping? Not for religious reasons, of course.

Why?....................

Nice idea and I wouldn't mind seeing something like this implemented but............money talks and this would have an effect on those rascally tax revenues, the government ain't gonna give that up.
-
Nice idea, but it will never fly. Twenty-first century Americans want what we want when we want it, regardless of day or time. Retailers will not voluntarily close on Sunday since it would mean losing money. The only way to implent it would be via government mandate, and both retailers and the general public would figuratively lynch any legislator who proposed it or voted for such a law. In short, ain't gonna happen.

Is there anything in the NT that says a store should be closed on Sunday?
-
There is nothing in the NT that mentions anything like VELCRO - but velcro holds my shoes on my feet.
- :wavey: - the Baptist Smilie - keeps both feet firmly on floor, only waves one hand - yep, it is a Baptist Smilie -
I've never been too fond of government "campaigns" to "discourage" stuff. It's this nagging desire I have for liberty...it keeps getting in the way of nanny state-ism. -
We could all stay home on Sundays and make sure our tires are inflated to the right pressure...
or check our spark plugs to make sure they are gauged right.. -

Now before someone jumps in and says, "Hey, Saturday is the Sabbath," let's see what the definition is for Sabbath.

Why not a system that allows driving on alternate days only - like the one used for water lawns in drought areas?
Why not mandate a four day work week?
How about restricting driving to only to and from work like they do with restricted driver's licenses for drunk drivers?
If you want the government to be in charge of how much we drive why be so stingy about it? -
Yes, why be so stingy?
The Gov. could make it a crime to own more than one car.
Or have road blocks to check air pressure...
Or ....
WAIT WHAT ARE WE DOING HERE?
If Obama happens onto this thread, it may give him ideas....
Shhhhh...... -
In the bad old days Washington State had a Sunday closing law. Sunday in Seattle was generally so quite that At the Georgetown Police Precinct the day shift sergeant would cut the cards and half the crew would go home (but theoretically stay near the phone in case something happened). Some Sundays I could go an entire shift without getting a call.
The law was changed so that mothers, and I suppose, Jews, could legally buy milk for sick kids. Six months later the taverns were open on Sunday and it was same old, same old. Life WAS better when we had Sunday closing. -
Life was definately slower... I barely remember the days in WV when things closed on Sunday... I remember my dad buying fuel on Sat. to go to church on Sunday because our local stations were closed.
