Please forgive me if this is on the wrong board...wasn't sure where to ask.
I am trying to get a general idea of what the Southern Baptist church is like, say compared to an IFB. I have never known anyone who attented a SBC or really any other form of Baptist other than Independent or IFB.
I have been reading over stuff at web site http://www.sbc.net/ but I am basically looking for more of a personal experince I guess you could say. When looking for Baptist churches in the area I am moving to, there is a Southern Baptist church, so I am just trying to get some information. Any help would be appreciated.

Dianna,
Most SBC hold to the Baptist Distinctives found in the IFB churches. In most cases our churches are not as restrictive in the side issues such as women only wearing dresses, one version only, and standing against CCM(although not all IFB hold to all these). Our churches are independent fellowships that are autonomous and self ruled. There is no ecclesiastical body that sets above the local church and tells it what it can and cannot do. The properties of the local church belong to that church and not the SBC. We voluntarily join with other SBC churches to support more than 4000 missionaries all around the world in more than 100 countries. The mission money is funneled through the Cooperative Program to fund missions and the schools and seminaries and also the state and national workers. It is not a perfect system but it has been used of God to get the Gospel to the world. I hope this helps some.

Bro.Tony gave a very accurate description. Let me add that there are some SBC churches that are very Traditional - hymns only, very formal worship, etc. There are some that are very contemporary - praise bands, contemporary music, etc. And, there is everything in between!

The onlt real difference between SBC and IFB (as a whole) is that the SBC agree to The Baptist Faith and Message. Most give to the SBC itself to support missionaries.
Not really a lot of differences, when you look at it. I know KJVO SBC churches as well as IFB churches. -
oops, double post :(

That is Seven Words repeated 11 times
BTW, the local congegration of the Freewill Baptist Church
dropped 'Baptist' from their Title and 'Freewill' as well (still
a member of the 'Freewill Baptist' denomination.)
The three Sunday Worship Services for CROSSPOINTE CHURCH are:

Thank you all for this information. :) I know I will not really be able to tell what a church is like until I visit a few times, but have to make the choice as to what churches to visit and which ones to steer clear of. I do apprecaite all the info :)

Fact is all Baptist churches whether IFB or SBC, are independent, so each one will be different based on the pastor and the people.

Technically speaking, I'm not a Southern Baptist.
I am a member of the Alameda Baptist Church [ABC] (formerly
Alameda Street Baptist Church).
ABC is a member of the Union Association (mainly Cleveland
County, Ok). ABC is a member of the Baptist General
Convention of Oklahoma (BGCO). ABC is a member of the
Southern Baptist Convention (SBC).
Union Association is a member of the Baptist General
Convention of Oklahoma (BGCO). Union Association is a member of the
Southern Baptist Convention (SBC).
The Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma (BGCO) is a member of the
Southern Baptist Convention (SBC).
So I can say "I'm Southern Baptist" even though technically
speaking, individuals cannot be members of the SBC, only
Churchs and organizations.
The Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma (BGCO) will
be celebrating it's Centenial (100 years) on 9 Nov 1906
(Oklahoma will be celebrating it's Centenial about the
same time in 1907.) The BGCO consists of some 1,734 individual
congegartions with 750,000 members (that is up from the
1906 count: 882 churches with 40,617 members).
Those 1,734 congegrations include:
9 Korean churches,
28 African American churches,
5 Chineese churches,
60 Hispanic churches,
183 Native American churches,
3 churches for the deaf,
2 Philippine churches,
1 East Indian church,
1 Japanese church,
3 Vietnamese churches,
2 Slavic churches,
several multi-national/international churches. -
than between Oklahoma Catholics and California Catholics. -

There is no such thing as The Southern Baptist church. There are over 44,000 independent, autonomous Baptist congregations in the US that are affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention. The affiliation is voluntary, not necessarily based on doctrinal conformity but on general doctrinal compatibility, and is tied to the church's voluntary financial support of the Cooperative Program, which is the SBC's funding mechanism for missions and theological education.
The Baptist Faith and Message is the general statement of faith that the convention has adopted for its missions agencies and seminaries. It is not binding on the churches, which do not have to accept it in order to be Southern Baptist. Only those who work for the missions agencies or educational institutions owned directly by the SBC must sign it. The Baptist principle of local church freedom means that it is the local church which determines its own statement of faith, doctrine and practice.
Churches that cooperate with the SBC are quite diverse in terms of worship styles, doctrine and theology, methods of doing evangelism and missions, and in just about every other way. Visiting two might not give you a clear idea of what Southern Baptists are like. The two SBC congregations that I have been a member of are about as different as you can get in terms of methods and worship, yet hold very similar beliefs. -

CCM is an umberella term that can be applied to many individual genres of christian music that are similiar to what can be found in secular markets. The industry is typically "artist driven" and can be found in radio markets across the USA and Canada (K-LOVE and WAY-FM are nationally syndicated radio markets that program such music).
