The Green Mountain Independence Movement
The Second Vermont Republic is a peaceful, democratic, grassroots solidarity movement committed to the return of Vermont to its rightful status as an independent republic as was the case in 1791 and to support Vermont's future development as a separate, sustainable nation-state. Members of the Second Vermont Republic subscribe to the following principles:

Welcome to the future of Vermont. From 1777 - 1791, the citizens of Vermont governed themselves as an independent republic. As we enter the 21st century, Vermont Commons is an organization dedicated to the proposition that Vermonters should peaceably secede from the United States and govern themselves as an independent republic once again. We created this interactive site to encourage thoughtful participation from anyone interested in this endeavor.

We tried that here in Virginia one time. The folks up north didn't like it and tried to kill us.
On a serious note though brother, that movement has some life here in the south again especially in South Carolina and Texas. I wish God in his mercy would allow it to happen. -
It is an intersting concept at least

What in the world does Vermont have to sustain as a nation?
-
Unquestionably. Of the 200 or so independent nation-states in the world, 50 of them have a smaller population than Vermont-608,000. Five of the ten richest countries in the world as measured by per capita income are smaller than Vermont-Liechtenstein, Iceland, Luxembourg, Bermuda, and Cayman Islands. Political independence is not a synonym for economic and political isolation. Over 600 Vermont firms export nearly 24 percent of the State's gross state product. We see no reason why this should change after independence.

Silly notion, IMO.

"We see no reason why this should change after independence"
How about political pressure from the United States?!?! Hello, are you folks living in La-La Land? Do you think the US is going to let you leave the United States and carry on with business as usual?
That's what I want to be know as, the next Iceland! You could put it on the license plates.
I agree with Terry, this is a silly notion. -
What liberty don't you have right now? You think you have servitude now, just wait until Vermont is trying negotiate deals to bring oil to their "county"! Or do you have some way of running your country on Ben and Jerry's? Perhaps instead of quoting Samuel Adams, you should crack one open and relax?

Fine, that may well be, but who do you think is going to win a bidding war between the country of Vermont and the US?
But, listen, I am a huge alternative energy guy so if you folks would start your own country perhaps that would be the shove we need to bring electric cars (or at least a 30mpg minimum for every car and truck made and not the goofy US government way of figuring mpg) to the market place as a real option when purchasing a car rather then the political statement it is now. -
The United Nations has already taken care of that for us through Agenda 21. Their idea of good gas mileage is you and I pedaling our bicycle to work inside a campact and constantly surveilled city so you needn't worry much longer about the high price of gasoline or outbidding a tiny independent country like Vermont that would most likely reject Agenda 21 in favor of a constituionally limted and sovereign government.
