DH and I have been trying to practice a more self sufficient lifestyle for many years now, especially now that we have children. These are some of the books we have used for ideas ranging from gardening, hunting, saving money, building, raising animals, and home defense:
The Encyclopedia of Contry Living by Carla Emery
This is usually the first book people get when building a self sufficiency library. It covers a huge amount of information, listing each vegatable, showing the care of every kind of livestock, canning and preserving. It's beautifully written with a great deal of love and care.
Backwoods Home Magazine www.backwoodshome.com
A magazine dedicated to a more self sufficient lifestyle. Also has great political articles from a Libertarian viewpoint.
The Tightwad Gazette by Amy Dacyczyn
Pinching pennies to death ideas for families.
The Foxfire series
Preserving the culture, skills and stories of the Appalachian mountain folks. I'm currently working on buying each one.
The Modern Homestead Manual by Skip Thomsen
A very basic informative book for those contemplating moving away from the city.
How To Develop A Low-Cost Family Food Storage System by Anita Evangelista
Tips on building and storing food for the entire family.
Where There Is No Doctor by David Werner
Emergency First Aid, basic health guidelines, and guides for routine healthcare.
