Sen. Ensign Acknowledges an Extramarital Affair

It seem like it never ends with politicians.

Sen. John Ensign (Nev.), considered a rising star in the Republican Party, yesterday acknowledged an extramarital affair with a former campaign staffer who is married to one of the lawmaker's former legislative aides.

Ensign, a member of the Senate Republican leadership, disclosed the affair at a hastily arranged news briefing in Las Vegas, his home town. He flew home yesterday morning after informing GOP leaders on Capitol Hill of his impending announcement, missing a vote on tourism legislation considered important to Nevada's casino industry.

Had the guy been a Democrat, certain folks would be on here saying it is typical "libbie" behavior. I could say it once again shows the GOP's REAL values. Instead, let's just say that all of us have human frailties and can exhibit behavior counter to our core beliefs. I do agree that politicians seem to think the rules are made for others, but not them.

Personally, I don't care what he does in his personal life.

I doubt that is the case. Any of us who think we are above sin are only kidding themselves. When a spouse strays, it often has nothing to do with respect for the other spouse.

I never kid myself. I know what my sins are and that I am above nothing.

I just happen to care very much that some of these men, these politicians from the birth of our nation until today, cannot be faithful to their wives.

You said we shouldn't care .... I can't help it. I care.

I understand that these guys are all about the adrenline rushes akin to high risk sports, the "thrill" of the chase and not getting caught. To them, it's about entitlement, ego-stroking, and being above the moral law of the land.

I know that to them, like you say, it had nothing to do with their wives. But a wife will never understand that. To her, it has everything to do with her. And she feels like horse manure trying to figure out why she isn't good enough.

So maybe he didn't intentionally set out to disprespect his wife and never even had her in the back of his mind. He, like most of these D.C guys who cheat, can separate sex with his wife and sex with a mistress and never consider the two to have anything to do with each other.

And that mindset alone is the foundation of his disrespect for his wife. He may actually love his wife. But his act of betrayal of their marriage vows has everything to do with her ..... everything.

And how does a man who will betray the person that he is one-flesh with have the heart of the people he represents at the forefront of his daily job?

To me, it doesn't matter if he's a Democrat or a Republican. Cheating on your spouse, is not good. While this is a personal matter that should left for the politician, the spouse, & the third person to deal with. My thought on anyone serving in public office cheating on thier spouse is if they cheat on their spouse, do they (or will they) cheat us on anything? Cheating & womanizing is not just limited to Democrats. Its sad, but true.

While its not always the case, I believe that some of the mariages of politicians are for power more than love (not always). Hillary Clinton is an example of that. I think if she filed for divorce in 1998 during the Monica Lewinsky bit, she'd be out of the Whitehouse & probably wouldn't be where she is today. I still think she would have been a senator, but I don't think she'd be the Secreatry of State. If Bill Clinton had any sort of political future beyond being president, his political career would have suffered the most.
