I will pair up some singers and I would like you to explain why certain individuals are/were better singers. In some of my couplings the duos may seem an odd pair, at other times they seem to have some affinity with one another.
Now this has nothing to do with their lifestyle or the size of their discography. I just want you to comment on the quality of their voices versus the other member they were matched with. I will give you my opinion at a later time.
1) Dean Martin and Bing Crosby
2) Perry Como and Andy Williams

I know, I know. A lot more names could be added. This thread will separate the old posters from the not-so-old. Some of you might be scratching your heads and muttering:"Who are these people? I don't even know half their names, much less knowing their songs." Well stay tuned. I hope some older posters will be paying attention to this thread. If not I will have a conversation with myself. ;-)

As for #1, I would rate Dean higher than Bing. I know if it wasn't for Crosby Martin would not have had a foundation to build upon. Crosby was a pioneer in the music business. In the 30s and 40s he dominated like no one ever has.
However, Dean's voice has a lot more appeal for me when doing a comparison of the same songs. Bing deserves a lot of credit because Dean could just modify Bing's material. But check out the differences in these songs:
Dinah,
You must have been a beautiful baby
Muskrat ramble
Alabamy bound
Carolina in the morning
Way down yonder in New Orleans
Basin Street blues
June in January
Just one more chance
Wrap your troubles in dreams
In the cool, cool, cool of the evening
Memories are made of this
You belong to me
Don't let the stars get in your eyes
Dean just has more pep and vitality --more charm. Bing comes across less exciting in comparison. Their voice qualities are similar, but their approaches are noticeably different.
