Her first mistake was hopping the fence to get her phone, she should have called the police and let them get it.
Her second is not being armed to fight off and defend herself against a deadly attack.
Her third is staying in this place with this dangerous fellow right next door and not arming and getting trained to use a gun for her self defense. The police do not often catch the bad guys in the act of murder, they simply investigate after the crime.

Though it was well known that Jordan was threatening hikers along the trail, he was sentenced to probation, fined and released from jail. Police say they knew Jordan was a threat but because hikers refused to press charges and testify against him in court, their only recourse was to fine and release him. Homicides are rare on the Appalachian Trail. The last homicide to take place on the famous footpath happened in 2011.
