Pennsylvania Jim,
If George Bush worked to tighten up abortion and make it harder to get them. And worked to AGAIN ban partial-birth abortion. And worked to pass the marriage-ammendment. Would you give him credit or sit back and insult him like you do now?
What if he appointed pro-life judges, as he has said he would do and as the left is freaking out about.
What would he have to do to earn your respect?

Lee,
Bush has proposed, and gotten, massive increases in federal funding for Planed Parenthood. He could gain my respect by apologizing, and proposing to immediately end all federal funding. He can do that tomorrow, if he wants to. No, today.
He could state the truth that Roe V. Wade was a ruling on a single case, and is not the law of the land, and therefore he will instruct the justice department not to abide by it. In light of the fact that 4000 babies are being killed daily, I would respect him for that.
If he appointed truly pro-life judges (not just people who say that they ore pro-life, but people who will judge accordingly), I would respect that. But, he has promised that "pro-life" will not be a requirement in his appointments, which fits with the expectation that his first Supreme Court noiminee may be Miguel Estrada.
There are other things that he could do to earn my respect. But if we were both betting men, I could get rich. ;) -
Heck, why would Bush make abortion illegal?
He has to keep ya'll strung along somehow... and since this one has gotten all of you to vote the way of his wealthy 'base', why spoil a good thing?
Think carrot on a stick. -
You got it.
-
Any other observations, anyone?
-
And now, he doesn't care. He won't be up for re-election again, and he can spit on our values with impunity.
Remember when I predicted that evangelicals would line up and vote as they were told? -
But Bush says he's a Christian, and he's against abortion and gay marriage. Bush agrees with our "moral values". He's God's choice!
Yeah, right! -
Let me be clear about my own position on Senator Specter. I voted for his opponent in the Republican primary in PA, Pat Toomey. I would have preferred that he be replaced by a more conservative Republican. However, I voted FOR Senator Spector in the genaral election because he is more conservative by far than his democratic opponent.
As to the statement itself, please read THIS LINK from the Philadelphia Daily News. It contains Senator Specter's complete statement and demonstrates that the Associated Press reporter who wrote the story intentionally misrepresented what Specter said in her explanation and in the title which she gave to her story. I am quoting from this link in the information below.
Here is Senator Specter's COMPLETE statement:
Furthermore, I believe that Christian conservatives are making a strategic mistake in seeking to remove Senator Specter. Since HE IS a moderate and since HE IS going to support the president's nominees, his suppport will highlight the hypocrisy of the democrats who oppose Bush's nominees and shame SOME of them into supporting the nominees and breaking the fillibusters.
Christian conservatives, STOP misrepresenting what Senator Specter said!!!
Christian conservatives, is it wise to throw out a man who disagrees with you philisophically but will vote in a way that is helpful to your cause? Remember that Jesus said "He that is not against you is for you". -
Swaimj,
Specter is one of the most pro-abortion Senators in Washington.
I agree with you that his statements were exaggerated, I looked at them repeatedly to see the "blunt warning".
It wasn't blunt, and it really didn't look like a warning.
He simply stated what is probably true:
Bush will not send up anyone who truly wants to stop abortion, and he and Specter will work together to keep the status quo.
Shame on any Christian who supports this. -
Swaimj,
It seems to me that you have taken "lesser evil" voting to new depths.
You voted for a man for Senate who promotes legislation to legalize the killing of babies up to the time of birth.
Heil GOP! -
PA Jim,
Thanks for your replies. I'm glad you recognize that Senator Specter's statement is being misrepresented by conservatives.
Senator Specter has voted FOR judges who are pro-life such as Scalia and Thomas. Senator Specter voted to ban partial birth abortions. Senator Specter WILL shepherd through President Bush's judicial appointees as chairman of the judicial committee.
As Christians, we are called to be salt; to retard the growth of evil in the world. We are not called to or required to take over the world and force it to be Christian. Supporting Bush and Specter will not usher in the kingdom of God upon earth, but it WILL retard the evil of abortion. Thus, I support the two with a clear conscience. -
Many Christians have the same viewpoint. "It's OK for Christians to be politically active, so long as they are not successful".
-
It's been 31 years since Ror V Wade, and we've been fed the same garbage the whole time.
When are we going to damand a stop to it...or is it just a fun political issue to play around with? -
PaJim,
Abortion 2004. Now pay close attention, this may get too complicated for you.
Kerry equaled NO CHANCE to positively affect the country on this issue.
Peroutka equaled NO CHANCE to positively affect the country on this issue.
Bush equaled SOME CHANCE to positively affect the country on this issue.
You made your choice - now live with it! -
........ lotta good that did me ........... -
Diane,
That's about the same level of opposition most folks who claim to be "pro-life" give.
You have to express it at the polls. If you keep voting for people who say that they are pro-life, and then get in office and point the finger at someone else, nothing will change.
That's what I meant about demandig a stop to it. -
-
PA Jim,
Conservatives in PA TRIED to oust Senator Specter and choose a new Republican nominee who was opposed to abortion. The failure to oust Specter showed that WE DO NOT HAVE the political strength to TAKE OVER the system. Given this, strategically it is better to try to effect change from within the system rather than try to overthrow it. Your strategy of voting for third party candidates GUARANTEES that we will lose in the long term and make no incremental gains in the interim. I'd rather actually win some battles along the way than lose like you do and have only the benefit of feeling self-righteous. -
Conservatives lost because Bush, who you support, campaigned at the last minute for the liberal.
WE are not making incremental gains. With the GOP in power, things are headed to the left at a blinding pace, faster than ever.
On the abortion issue, there has not been ONE action by the GOP that has saved ONE baby.
Will you patiently accept their excuses for another 31 years, at 4000 murders PER DAY? -
BTW, thanks for another personal insult.
