Students Asked To Plot Terror Attack

PUEBLO, Colo. -- A ninth grade history project at a high school in Pueblo was supposed to teach students about terrorism, but instead it outraged parents.

Gini Fischer says her daughter came home Thursday saying she had two minutes to come up with a plot for an act of terrorism.

Over 110 freshmen at Pueblo County High School were given the project.

The teacher claims the assignment was to illustrate an act of terrorism by a foreign government on American soil.

District 70 Superintendent Dr. Dan Lere said students may have misinterpreted the assignment.
He says if a student, "actually did illustrate an act of terrorism that they might commit, let's say against the school, we've expelled students for that."

Either the teacher gave an assignment that was against the law, or the teacher was so unclear that the illegal interpretation was assumed by much of the class.

Either way the teacher needs some talking to.

Against the law? So, creative writing is against the law now? Personally, I think the writing assignment was a little dumb, but to say it's illegal is going a bit far.

Yep...certainly legal, but I would like to know the larger context of the assignment before passing judgement. On the surface, it appears to be in poor taste.

Plotting an act of terrorism, that will get you arrested. Calling it creative writing? Just another way to justify an attemp to desensitize the next generation.

I don't think the teacher should have made that assignment. Its in poor taste & the teacher should be counseled by the principal. If the teacher does it again, I would give serious thought to suspending or firing him/her. I don't think its illegal though.

When I was in 9th grade, our asignment was to create an advertisement or commercial. I went with the commercial & made a presentation. My idea was a home security system that featured AK-47s, land mines, trenches, bunkers, barbed wire, & armor plating. The first 1,000 customers would also get a free turret which could be mounted anywhere (rooftop or on the ground). Needless to say, my teacher gave me some bonus points for my creativity, but I don't think it was one she was too happy with. I only got a B on it. I was expecting an A.

The lack of imagination is something that helped the terrorists on 9/11..

If we can think of a scenario.. then we should be able to think of a way to stop it.

Preparing our future citizens to think outside the box, may stop terrorists attacks in the future...

While I see the cons I also see some pros.. who knows.?

Some of the best in the antivirus field are great hackers...
I suspect some of our future best in the anti terrorism field will be those who can think like a terrorist.

While there may be some use of thinking like a terrorist if one is in security and defense of our country, children have enough imaginations and images of violence from realistic crime shows and violent movies and horror flicks.

What ever happened to the old creative writing assignments .......If you could be anyone in the world who and why? or If you were President how would you lead the country? or Imagine yourself alone on an island, and describe how you'd stay alive and in what order would you take care of your needs. What would you invent or how would you improve something you already use.

Now that would be creative writing.... and creative use of the imagination which is neither violent, and might even inspire some aspirations.
