Sugar-Coated Cuss Words. Should a Christian say Gee?

    Seriously though, these should be looked at as intramural debates in a sense.

    Outright heresy by traditional orthodox standards is not allowed so there should not be anyone here who does not have a clear statement of Faith in Christ.

    It is also interesting how you can make friends on here by arguing :)

    :laugh:Yep...and the ones I didn't learn there, I learned from the convicts where I work now. Is there such a thing as cultural swearing? Because I can control it for the most part outside of work, but at work, I don't even think about what I'm saying.

    Most of the world is going to Hell. There are hundreds of millions of people who are hungry and sick. But we should be concerned about saying "gee whiz?" Some of us have our priorities seriously out of whack.

    If you'll read the posts, you'll see that the huge majority of contributors to this thread aren't concerned about it. In fact, we've been having a lot of fun with it.

    At the same time, I don't want to blow off the ones who have expressed some concern. I certainly don't think their priorities are out of whack. And I think Christians should watch their language.

    But I do take some exception to your tack of comparing this discussion unfavorably with feeding the hungry, witnessing to the lost, etc. Many of our BB members have in fact done personal witnessing today, visited the sick, and some fed the hungry. Please don't use the old worn-out tactic of making it either-or, and suggesting that those of us who are discussing this subject are somehow unconcerned about the lost, sick and hungry.

    I noticed that you took the time to contribute. I would certainly not suggest that you were neglecting kingdom work by doing so.

    I simply was saying that this issue is so unimportant that I didn't think it deserved much attention. Comparing it to other concerns like the number of lost people in the world was a way to express that.

    I got a little defensive because I have seen this done before. Somebody will inevitably write this line: "If we'd spend more time (in prayer) (witnessing) (fill in the blank) instead of (fill in the blank) God would be more pleased." Or something along those lines.

    The unwritten suggestion is that they spend their time doing all those kingdom work deeds, and the rest of us are spiritually deficient because we don't do it as much as they do. See how I could take it that way?

    All of us make value judgments regarding the topics we think are worth discussing, and how much time we spend on this board. Debating over "darn" or "heck" is small potatoes compared to some of the others, no question.

    But boy, was it fun.

    I don't believe one should use by words (or sugar coated cuss words). I have often wondered if the phrase "Dog Gone" was another way of saying G.D. All curse words are bad, but I look at the G.D. word as being just as bad as the "F" word. Anytime I make a mistake (repeatidly), I'll kind of growl & pound my desk with my fist about four of five times. Sometimes, my assistant manager looks at me like I'm crazy, but at least it keeps me from saying questionable words or phrases. I can't afford one of those jars where you pay everytime you say something bad.

    My take on GD is that is the worst one can say, more than all the four letter or vulgar terms ever invented.

    I see what you're saying with that. With me, its not so much anger, but frustration. While I don't get angry at people or things they do very easily, I get frustrated at myself when I constantly make the same mistake over & over again. I don't curse, but I have had the tendancy to say "dog gone it" or "shoot". Pounding your fist allows you to relieve your frustration without saying anything.
