WATERTOWN, NY - Rev. Timothy LeBouf dismissed a female Sunday school teacher this month, saying a woman can perform any job--outside the church. He said that he dismissed the 81-year-old teach who had taught for 54 years, citing "I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be slient."

I wanna know how you "fire" a volunteer.

Course getting rid of Gramma just might get the preacher fired!

Preacher must be pretty immature if he couldn't have found a way to settle the issue without it becoming national news. Even though I agree that she shouldn't have been teaching men, maybe he needed to take a closer look at the events that led up to it. It's not "ursurping the authority of a man" if the mans asks for/agrees to the teaching.

I know how a church fires a volunteer because my wife and I were fired as the leaders of the 3rd and 4th grade group at our church 8 years ago. BTW, it was a different church than the one we're in now.

We volunteered to lead that group of 9 girls and 2 boys after the previous couple stated that the kids were total brats and that nobody could control them. We didn't have any problem with any of the kids. The year that we led that group was the best year of ministry my wife and I ever had at that church. Then the church hired a gutless coward of a youth minister that didn't have the balls to talk to me, but "fired" us by confronting my wife on a night that she was working late and I was at home.

No doubt about this. Check out how he fired her. From the statement on the church's website:

The meeting in which our Board made this decision took place on the evening of Wednesday, August 9th at 6:30 p.m. On Thursday, August 10th the letter was mailed to Ms. Lambert.

Incredible. He fired her via letter. I guess he was scared of her, because he didn't have the guts to talk to her in person.

From the Diaconate Boards statement:

Christian courtesy motivates us to refrain from making any public accusations against her.

Right. They can't make any public accusations, but they just implied that there is more to the story than a woman teaching a Sunday School class. Maybe the pastor and board thinks she just can't do the job anymore. Maybe it's this "women usurping authority" argument, or maybe they're just hiding behind that defense because they lack the spine to talk to her personally and tell her why they don't want her teaching anymore.

Firing by letter is the coward's way out.

I'm surprised this matter apparently did not go before the body of the church for a vote.

Someone could force the issue if they have the guts.

This just demonstrates how people use scripture intended for the "church" when the Sunday School movement is a modern concept and not really covered by "church" concepts.

Sorry state that this makes news, period!

Cheers,

Jim

No doubt this was one of those "strong pastors" types I saw talked about on another thread, with a bunch of "gutless wonders" sheep for followers.

Also, sombody musta cut out Titus 2: 3-5 out of that 'pastor's' (to use that term very loosely) Bible, while at the same time, giving some excellent  eisegesis on the passage he actually cited, where I'm pretty sure the context is that of "speaking in tongues", but I could be wrong here without actually looking it up. Oh yeah, those sounds you heard was my late grandfather, and my late mother rolling over, as my Grandfather was a pastor until he was 75, and my mother taught SS for over 60 years and was still teaching until her sudden death from a stroke a month shy of her 94th birthday, where the last thing she did the night before her stroke was study her SS lesson to teach the next Sunday.

We don't know the whole story, folks. Since the pastor said he could not say more about why she was dismissed, it could be that she was teaching unbiblical stuff, for all we know. Maybe the pastor did her a favor by using the text he did (which I agree with, btw) and not saying more.

Just because she's elderly and looks kind does not mean her teaching was sound. We, of all people, should be aware that we can't judge by looks.

I think it was local news because the pastor is also on the Watertown city council and the mayor apparently doesn't care for him. It became national news because some people think that attitude is Talibanish and it's easy to be outraged at someone being mean to Gramma (it does sound like a poor way of implementing the change).

Well, Rev. Timothy LaBouf gave as his explanation, "I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent" but the church board said there were "other issues".

You're right that it could be a kind excuse - we really can't tell from here.

I hope Rev. LaBouf, who likes to interpret the Bible literally, hasn't read Luke 10:19 and Mark 16:17-18 yet. Otherwise, he will soon have the congregation treading on snakes and scorpions and drinking poison. There is also a passage about walking on hot coals (Proverbs 6:28). Will they try that, too?

I predict a headline sometime in the next few months, as the church "corrects course" yet again:

"LaBouf goes Poof"

Many manuscripts do not have the last part of Mark 16 and it is widely believed not to have been part of the original canon. It's a very questionable section and not at all like the epistles.

Lk 10.19 was said to the seventy (see one or two verses before this).

I happen to agree that women should not teach a mixed SS class if the teaching is from or about the Bible, and I would probably not stay in a church that did this.
