Mumbai, India's financial capital, was a city under siege Thursday morning, as authorities struggled to regain order after teams of gunmen launched a wave of deadly nighttime attacks on several sites popular with Westerners.

The group behind the attacks reportedly singled out Americans and Britons as targets. It wasn't immediately clear whether U.S. citizens were among the dead, who numbered at least 101, the Associated Press reported. At least 250 people were injured in the attacks, Reuters reported.

India's NDTV reported Thursday morning that a "desperate hostage situation" still was under way at the Taj Mahal and Oberoi hotels, with a few terrorists holed up in each hotel despite Indian forces' attempts overnight to take back control of the buildings. As the sun rose, sporadic gunfire could be heard.

It isn't clear yet what motivated the attacks, which also targeted a popular tourist attraction and a crowded train station, though eyewitnesses said gunmen were heard shouting questions seeking people with American and British passports.

Prayers here, too. This may be India's 09/11. It is a terrible thing - the death toll and injured numbers keep rising and it isn't over yet. :tear: What cowards these terrorists are.

It is not the first in India and it will not be the last.

They did target English and Americans, but the also killed a Canadian first...a 21 year old Canadian Citizen at the hotel.

Cheers,

Jim

This makes me sick...India has had numerous attacks in the last few years, how many have died thus far, 4,000? And the poor little boy who witnessed his parents death at the Jewish Center…praying for all those innocent lives that were so horribly taken by evil and for those who lived through such evil …:tear:

My church ( www.lighthouseministries.org ) has a rather significant, mult-faceted missionary presence in Mumbai.

Our presence d/b/a the Church of Jesus Christ in India that is headed up by one of our staff missionaries who is a native-born Indian from Mumbai (which used to be called Bombay).

He and his family have fathfully ministered to the people in the slums of Mumbai. Additionally, the Lord has led him to exapnd his ministry in order to care for the spiritual condition of the people in the remote villages of India. He has invested much of his time in personally discipling and training pastors to lead the people in the 60+ churches that they have established.

They have also operated an orphanage and day care center in that area. The plight of these unwanted and abandoned childen would break your heart. The orphange and day care facilities they run is the most highly accredited one in thhe entire state. He has also started a Bible college in south India.

One would think that because of all the good that he and his staff of workers (most of which are indigenous Indians), he would be highly praised by the rest of the people around him. That is far from the truth. Because all of his work is done in the name of and for the glory of Jesus Christ, they've suffered bitter persecution and numerous death threats. Yet he and the many works our Lord has enabled him to build continue on in Jesus's name.

Several of the members of some the churches he was instrumental in establishing have members who were close relatives of many of the native Indians who lost their lives in this latest outbreak of terrorism.

If these terrorists (who've been linked to several groups that owe allegiance to Osama Bin Laden) ever gain a foothold in the heavy-populated region in which Mumbai is located, will not stop until they get their hands on not only the very unstable regional government that currently exists in part of India, but also the nuclear weapons that India has (and is thought to have in storage in some parts of the greater Mumbai area).
