As you know, Cuba is a communist state much like North Korea. The Cuban military is very competent and has far-flung responsibilities from providing hundreds of elite troops to guard Maduro in Venezuela to a leading combat role in assisting Assad in Syria.
Although Americans no longer speak out against human rights abuse worldwide, Cuba is a repressive prison state wherein percentagewise the death and imprisonment rates are higher than they were during Stalinism in the last century.
A short video interviewing some former political prisoners tells of the current torture and inhumane conditions in the Cuban gulag. Although the Castro brothers admit to 54,000 prisoners (among the highest rates in the world), dissidents say the number is a lie and another 20,000 are in the Cuban gulag.
Both the Catholic Church in Cuba and the communist government of the Castro brothers deny that there are political prisoners in Cuba--a lie that would be laughable if it were not so tragic for the political prisoners. There is no political freedom in Cuba.

There are 2.3 million Americans in prison or jail. The U.S. has 5 percent of the world’s population but 25 percent of its prisoners. One in three black men can expect to spend time in prison. There are 2.7 million minors with an incarcerated parent. The imprisonment rate has grown by more than 400 percent since 1970.
Recent research suggests that incarceration has lost its potency. A report released this week from the Brennan Center for Justice at the New York University School of Law finds that increased incarceration has had a very limited effect on crime over the past two and a half decades.

War on Whistleblowers, After Obama
The war on whistleblowers has injected fear of prosecution into all honest communications between national security officials and reporters, meaning that the public instead gets a steady diet of U.S. government lies, propaganda and self-serving rhetoric, a problem addressed by John Hanrahan.

Thank you for your post. I think most Americans forget that Cuba is not just another Caribbean nation. Instead, it is a totalitarian, Communist state that supports terrorism around the world and does not allow any political dissent at home. Even the Ladies in White are attacked when the peacefully march after Sunday services. Unfortunately, our current administration has said very little about human rights in their mad rush to "normalize" our relations with the Cuban government. Very sad. -
And we're becoming just like them.
