Books are so much better though. Dont forget to read the Hobbit first. I always wonder if people who only watched the movies wonder "where did he get that ring?" "Who is that old hobbit?" -
I want to know who didn't like the LoTR trilogy. Awesome book and incredible movies. I hope Peter Jackson makes the Hobbit, my dvd collection just seems to be missing something.

Fan #4 here.
Yes, you have to have The Hobbit to completely "get" LOTR. -
I didn't care for them all that much...they were just allright :tonofbricks:
Waaaaaayyyyyy too long, IMO -

The movies were pretty good. However, I tried reading them, and just couldn't force myself through Tolkein's writing style. I'm the same way with Shakespeare: I like the stories, but can't stand to read them.
-
Since I don't know how to read...
Or since I don't know how to read Tolkien, I loved the movies, if nothing else but for the trees and the hobbits. -
Alot of people feel that way. Tolkien's writing style is a little strange, by his own admission. He was a professor, not an author. But those of who are a little off have no trouble keeping up with his thoughts! :tongue3:

Book, great!
Movie, above average.

And us all liking different things is . . . well, what makes us so diverse :tongue3:

I thought the books were so much better then the movie. I liked the movies but as a suppliment to the books. Webdog maybe try reading the Hobbit and see if you like the books. If you like the Hobbit then you will like the rings. Plus the Hobbit gives you alot of background that you miss in the rings books and movies. -

I think you have to read about 100 pages or more in LOTR before it starts to grab you and suck you in. Some folk are not willing to read that far, so they quit before they get into it.
When the movies came out I tried to re-read LOTR after many years away from it, and had to force myself to keep reading until I got into it--but then I was set to go. Read the whole thing straight through. :applause: -
never read 'em - never saw the movies either (ok - last part of what i thought was the first movie but turned out to be the third...)
goes to show i don't know much or care much for that genre. :) -
Tolkien wrote for the joy of writing. That and I think a certain author friend of his badgered him into it.

I really loved the books and the movie. Yes one has to read "The Hobbit" first to have a clue as to what is going on.
