This has got to be the greatest book trilogy, no the greatest book ever written. The way that Tolkien wrote the story and spent so much time and dedication on it is incredible. Now I can tell the difference between fantasy and reality, but when i read these books it feels like im there.

The Lord of the Rings are good, but its not the Greatest Book. The Bible is 8-p. Its hard to get into it at frist, where as most books I read I can into after the frist chapter or two. But The Lord of the Rings it took me quite a while to get into.

Loved the books and the movies too! I cant wait for the third movie to be released.

Guitar 25,
What is it that you liked so much about it? What aspect of the time and dedication do you appreciate? -
I'm also a huge Tolkien fan! The man was a genius--the way he created entire cultures with their languages and histories. In the genre of Fantasy, he's often imitated but never duplicated!
LOTR and the Silmarillion are epic.
Although Peter Jackson has taken certain artistic liberties with the films, I'm a huge fan of the movies as well (Two Towers DVD out tomorrow!!!). Jackson really does "get" Tolkien, and the changes he made generally have worked well on the big screen. -
I always liked the more prosiac and gothic elements in the novels over the epic stuff. I enjoyed The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring more than I did the latter two in the series or the Silmarillion. I never feel a connection to the characters in high myth.
The journeys through the forest in The Hobbit and Moria in FOTR are classics psychological ventures.

I enjoyed reading the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy about 12 years ago. But I must admit, the way it's written, it was hard to follow. (The language style being of another era probably. )
The Two Towers DVD goes on sale tomorrow. The movies are beautiful. Of course I've always enjoyed fantasy when it was well done. Guess that's why I like Sci Fi too.
I think it's great when a work of fiction inspires a person to read. There is nothing better than actually enjoying a book so much that you hate to put it down and can't wait until you can pick it up again when you do.
Thanks for sharing your excitement with all of us. -

What makes me mad about the movies is the fact that they had to cut out so much in the movies. If you have read and seen the two towers you'll know what im talkin about. When Pippin and Merry are being dragged through the fields by the Uruk-hai, alot more happened then just them being threatened and almost being eaten and Pippin spotting the leaf broach off his cloak. There were entire chapters about there trails with them. And when they met Treebeard, there were like 2 chapters alone about them talking when they are traveling through the woods. Tree beard did not just take them to the meeting either. He also took them to his house for a night. They cut out so much, but still they made a good movie. the funniest part has to be when gollum fights with himself in the night.
Oh yeah Matt, you were right, the Bible is the greatest book ever written. i apologize. -

The folks at Christianity Today have had a lot to say about Tolkien, most recently about his relationship with C.S. Lewis.
-
Yeah we would have never seen The Hobbit had C.S. Lewis and Toliken not known each other.

"Come on, we can take em!"
"That's a long way"
"Toss me"
"What?!"
"I cannot jump the distance, you'll have to toss me. Uhh, but dont tell the elf!" -
I'm a big fan of the Lord of the Rings. I had read the books before I even knew that there would be movies coming out in 2 years! I thought they were great books. The way Tolkien makes up a whole new world is awesome. Think of how much time was put into these books. All the characters are so different and I love them all. They all seem to make me laugh. Has anyone ever heard of Finding Gold in the Lord of the Rings? This book is great. It puts the Lord of the Rings in a Christian perspective. Tolkien was a christian, but he did not right the book about God. Lewis did, but not him. This book uses different phrases or quotes and puts them to Bible terms. Its great!! I totally recommend it for all the fans of the Lord of the Rings!
You know, the only thing I was a little upset was when they took out the part when the 4 hobbits go to Tom Bombadils house because he saved them from getting eaten by trees. It was in The Fellowship of the Rings (the book)! I loved that part and the movie didn't show it. :( Oh well, I'll live....
I can't wait to see the last movie!! That book was my favorite one out of all of them! I'm counting down the days... -
This is so funny...I was just going to post the very same thing in the youth forum... Great minds think a like... Yeah, they are great movies...I just got the 2 towers for my birthday... so cool.
