The KJV is translated from the Received Text. Modern Bibles not translated from the Critical Text are translated from the Majority Texts. GES prefers the Majority Text. I think I'm correct.
Which text is correct? Free Grace theology seems to require a rendering different then "whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood". Jesus said, "he that believeth on me hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation." I think I'm quoting it right. How much do we have to know to be saved?
I don't want to debate. I just want to learn and I hope free gracers will participate. Thank you.
The congregation where I attend has a Free Grace orientation.
The decision about what Bible to use is freely graced to each individual. :)
I do not notice a slant toward one or the other among recent proponents of FGT.
As with most doctrine, free grace theology does not depend upon a single verse for support.
I strongly lean towards the Critical text; my friend leans toward the NKJV (based upon the textus receptus). It really is not that big a deal (excepting of course, here on the BB).
How much to we need to know to be saved?
I’m a sinner. Jesus died for my sins. Jesus conquered death and rose again. Trust/believe in him.
atoning sacrifice ἱλαστήριον through διὰ - [τῆς] faith πίστεως in ἐν His αὐτοῦ - τῷ blood, αἵματι, Berean Study Bible
a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. New International Version
as a propitiation in His blood through faithNew American Standard Bible
a propitiation by His blood, through faith New King James Version
As you can see the Greek can be rendered in English different ways. But what must be remembered is that the atonement/propitiation is accomplished through the blood of Christ Jesus. This term must be dealt with in a way that does not lessen God's revulsion to sin, but affirms His positive redemptive attitude toward sinners.
The way to receive the benefit of Christ Jesus' work on the cross is the same for everyone, "through faith". We receive the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ Rom 3:22
"Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?"
Every instance of true regeneration involves the "Conviction of an individual's personal sin against God".
Every instance of true regeneration involves "Repentance toward God of an individual's personal sin against God".
Then, Every instance of true regeneration involves "Faith" in Jesus Christ, as THE SAVIOR.
These elements involved in True Regeneration are implied any time, "belief", "trust", "choose", etc. are used.
The reason for wholesale loss of truth and the inability to decern Spiritual Truths is that the individuals who have "prayed for salvation" or "believed" in the flesh, without TRUE Conviction and Repentance and Faith are still lost in their sins.
"Sin" must be recognized and repented of in order to have a Savior FROM SIN.
In an instance where actual "free grace" is genuInely "believed, WITHOUT BEING BORN AGAIN, it is NOT WELL WITH THEIR SOUL.
The good news is that all of the main Greek texts used pretty much agree in vast majority of the time, and where there are variant differences, none affect any doctrines or theology!
