I think it's ironic that he admits the South has a heritage to represent, but doesn't like the symbol that represents it. He's always welcome to move up North, if he doesn't like it.
I also thought it was a little hypocritical that he says the flag represents oppression, but gives Obama a pass for marring his self aggrandizing "eulogy" by singing a song written by a notorious slave traders to a church full of blacks where a racially motivated mass shooting just took place.
The flag is not a symbol for the South in the minds and hearts of many Southerners. For many it has become an embarrassment. I would much rather see something or a number of somethings and ideas as symbols of the South.
Courtesy manners is a good place to start.
But the writer of the hymn repented. It is a beautiful hymn, one that the Black churches appreciate for the truth it contains. The folk in the Black church seems to be much more forgiving than many in the White church.
Remember the old saying:
"Oh Lord, I ain't what I want to be...
Oh Lord, I ain't what I oughta be...
Oh Lord, I ain't what I'm gonna be...
But thanks, dear Lord,
I ain't what I use to be..."
The Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia doesn't properly represent anything but racism and treason.
And those folks who want to fly it are IMO unAmerican, unpatriotic, and displaying an UnChristlike attitude.
Why would a people steeped in the teachings of Jesus Christ and the
Bible want to rally around a flag that so many associate with hatred and
violence?
Rally around a symbol of hatred and violence?
But may it never be that I would boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world [Galatians 6:14].
One's a square , one's a rectangle. Either Virginia or Tennessee, it's well documented why folks started flying it and it has nothing to do with heritage.
Your reply and the reply of several others prove the point that in some circles there is no critical thinking, maybe no thinking at all, and thus you are proving why ignorance is destroying both America and the Christian church. And if that is not enough you re-enforce the false stereotypical view of Southerners being bigoted, narrow, uninformed, unthinking, interested only in fast cars, moonshine, lazy and prone to violence.
Please try to figure out the topic and stick to it. Thanks.
If you ask an intelligent, rational and on topic question I will respond. But not to your normal misdirection, smoke blowing questions. Or maybe I should just wait until you begin answering questions. OK?
. And you continue to prove the point made in the OP. Sad that is it, but so true. No thinking. No rationality. Just an off topic remark aimed insulting, but not in adding anything to the topic.
So if someone does not agree with the op the poster of the op will just make adhominem personal attacks. I think all posts need some rationalism and kindness.
I do not see that any response in this thread deserves such personal attacks. People will disagree and if we cannot deal with that then maybe we should refrain from posting.
No, that is not the thought. If you disagree then disagree intelligently.
Your simply replies only go to prove the point of the thread on anti-intellectualism.
Then reply with intelligence and not with simple one-line quips that add absolutely nothing to the thread. Try writing an entire paragraph or two that says something. Thanks.
