Tongues

Dr. Bob Griffin says I'm not welcome to post in his Closed Section
and that tongues are vile and perverted.

Pastork on the otherhand has explained the tongues issue as
I experienced it. I commend you for your thoughts and answers,
Sir.

Yes, tongues associated with the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and
as a gift; with or without interpretation is for today.

However there is a WARNING to be aware of .......

1. Do not pray in the confines of your own home
2. Do not seek God with all your heart and mind
3. Do not read your bible diligently
4. Do not pray after a spiritually arousing bible study
5. Do not expect answers from God
6. Do not raise your hands in praise
7. Do not seek the baptism of the Holy Ghost

* Disregarding these posted rules could result in the most
enjoyable and edifying first-hand visit from the Holy Ghost
you could ever imagine.

I still can't believe Christians continue to resist the Holy Spirit and his gifts. I find it very discomforting to know that those who profess Christ reject his Spirit. That's unfortunate, because the Spirit of the Lord is freedom.

Many quote that verse quite glibly.
Those in the occult often say that they have freedom too.
Do we ever have freedom to do that which is clearly contrary to the Word of God?

Carson, does the scripture II Timothy 3:5 ring a bell?
5) Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

Just bring up the subject of "Tongues" or "Water Baptism" and there will be two that will usually show up. It happens everytime! ;)

You and I have discussed "prayer languages"
before, so you basically know how I think on the
issue. I hope that you do not perceive me as
making fun of those who claim a "prayer
language,"' becaue that is not my purpose. It is
that I just now remembered something.

As a child, I knew a lady who did this in front of
me, and I will never forget the phrase she
repeated over and over in her ecstatic prayer. It
sounded like, "Malarkey, malarkey, malarkey." I
wondered, as I heard her do it, if the others there
wondered at this phrase.

My mother, as a child reared a Baptist, had a
neighbor who did this. She told me that the lady
always said, "Ah semity yackity yo."

I find it interesting that whenever I have heard this
"prayer language," it has always been repeated
phrases which use the same sounds as those of
English--no variation.

I had one lady, from the church I used to attend,
offer to talk, sing, and pray for me in her "prayer
language," but I declined. Perhaps I should have
allowed her to talk a bit, so that I could hear if this
was true for her.

Abiyah, am I to understand that, because your personal experience has been questionable, then by extension all those who claim the gift of tongues are exactly like these people?

Abiyah

Not at all, Tragic. MEE and I had a discussion
in a thread sometime back, and this is merely an
addition to what we had discussed then.

I had forgotten all about this "malarkey" incident
until today, when I used the word malarkey for the
first time in ages, and it reminded me.

While I do not believe in 'prayer languages," finding
nothing in my Bible about them, my experience
with this concept is too limited to base all of other
people's experiences upon them. I was merely
stating what I have observed and been told about
them by others. Those others' observations were
similar to mine.

**Abiyah, actually it never entered my mind about what you believe, on the subject of "speaking in tongues." You aren't one of the two that I was referring.

Everyone has an opinion about the saints of God speaking in tongues. It started back on the Day of Pentecost. (Acts 2:12-13)

12) And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?

13) Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.

So you see, it's not new. Some just don't understand.

Maybe you just fall into the "just don't understand" category. I'd like to think that anyway...because I think that you are a nice person. ;)

You are so sweet. Thank you. 8o)

I do believe that the people in Acts and
Corinthians spoke in tongues, given to them by
the Holy Spirit. I do also believe thaa if our God
chooses to do so, He, being our God, can cause
a person to speak in a tongue they never learned,
should the circumstances bring the need or
should our God desire to do so. This, to me, is
one phase of biblical tongues.

I believe that another phase of biblical tongues is
for a person to go to class and do the hard work
of learning a language. I further believe that some
are gifted to be able to acquire many languages
quickly an easily; this, too, is a biblical gift of
tngues, in my opinion.

But what I do not read in my Bible is a "prayer
language" one can turn on and off, as though it
is on a switch, for their convenience and
entertainment of others. I have heard people
claim to be able to do this. If it is truly of the
Holy Spirit, it is not a toy.

I still hope that I have not hurt anyone's feelings,
but this is what I believe. 8o)

But on the day of Pentecost everyone understood clearly and in their own languages. So sorry, this has nothing to do with what you call speaking in tongues.

PS. Am I one of the people you were referring to? ;)

It always amazes me how people can come to this board, see a section that says "Baptists Only," and then get torqued when they're asked to leave that section.

Analogy: I invite you to my house. Even though my bedroom door is closed, you open it and walk into my bedroom. I ask you to leave my bedroom, and you get all huffy and upset.

Grow up and get over it, already.

Hey Don:

I see the Spirit of Contention operates in you too.

Yes I was offended. I feel like some consideration could have
been given to me as I strayed off course. Do they just shoot
the survivors here ? What happened to a considerate response ?
I experienced this with Catholics on another board. I was hoping
maybe Baptists were a step above that.

Walking into your playroom isn't quite the same as walking in to some
one's bible study. Are you sure it isn't the tongues issue that irritates
you, or did I step on your friend's bare feet while I was dirtying
up his room with my presence..?

Lorelei:

Don't be quick to discount the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. It's
like putting salt on bland food. It adds to your well being and
it's scriptural. There's more to it than the verse you quoted.

Matthew 3:11
I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he
that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not
worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and
[with] fire:

Mark 1:8
I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you
with the Holy Ghost.

Luke 3:16
John answered, saying unto [them] all, I indeed baptize you with
water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes
I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy
Ghost and with fire

Have you been Baptized with the Holy Ghost, Lorelei ?

Singer,

Those verses don't say anything about tongues.

I am CERTAIN that I have been Baptized by the Holy Spirit, because Jesus promised me that He would do so.

Tongues is not the evidence of that. It is ONE of the gifts. Gifts that are for the edification of the Church and the spreading of the Gospel. Praying alone in tongues does neither.

Just to clarify, I am not a tongues prayer. I have before, but realized through a test I put on it, that not only was it not of the Holy Spirit, but it was demonic.

It also just so happens that I spoke in tongues before I was a Christian. When I was at a 'charismatic' church. Explain that.

If I offended anyones 'experience', I am truly sorry. I can't help but speak of the things that I have seen, heard, and done.

God Bless

Carson,

Not speaking in tongues is not rejecting the Spirit.

The 'tongues' that people speak, are not the same 'tongues' that were at pentecost. Sorry, but they aren't. There are instances of THOSE tongues, I have heard of. People witnessing to others of a different language. They carry on a conversation, one speaking english, the other spanish and they understand, and the outcome is repentance and baptism. THAT is the tongues present at pentecost.

What people do nowadays, is self edifying. That isn't what that gift is for.

God Bless

The reason MEE and I can talk about this subject
is that she does not get angry and/or snide. She
states what she believes and she accepts that I
believe what I believe without rancor. I suggest
that you learn from her.

Speak of a spirit of contention . . . .

MEE,
Can you demonstrate by going through 1Cor.14, that the gift of tongues is a gift that is to be practiced for today.

Briguy

Hi all, It always amazes me when Christians, good Christian folk mind you, talk about tongues and and sound Biblical teaching gets thrown out the window. The reason many people won't open their minds up to what the Bible says on "speaking in tongues" is that they started speaking in tongues BEFORE they checked to see what the Bible says about it.

Clear teaching is this in a nut shell:
Paul said tongues were a "sign".
"signs" (like a road sign) point to something that is to come.
Paul quotes Isaiah, where Isaiah talks about "foreign" tongues coming before the destruction of Isreal.
Tongues were a "sign" pointing to the destruction of Isreal and the Jewish people being scattered.
In 70ad Isreal was destroyed and her people scattered.
The "sign pointed to the event and the event happened so the sign is not needed anymore (road signs for a city stop when you enter the city).

That is just clear and sound and biblical to boot. Many well meaning Christians speak in Tongues but it is not the gift of tongues that is happening. It is simply wishful thinking. Which makes sense because those who speak in tongues feel it brings them closer to God.
This post was meant to be simple and informative. I hope it was not offensive, it was not intended that way

In Love and Truth,
Brian

Briguy, you pointed out something important: Paul taught that tongues were for a sign.

May I add? Paul qualified that statement with "tongues are a sign NOT for believers, but for unbelievers."

Believers don't need to see the evidence of tongues.
