I was at a service this week and the church we speaking on what they believe.
When the subject on Tongues came about they we speaking on the subject by the word.
However, they then stated that when you received the baptism of the Holy Spirit that it means you have a Superior Annointing or something like that??
It means you were at the wrong church  .
I said that to be funny but in all honesty I would encourage you to find a good Bible believing church. There is no further blessing from the Holy Spirit and to say there is is to say that God did not give you His best when you got saved. It is to say that God held something back when you came to know His son. You cannot be Baptized in the Holy spirit because He lives in the believer already. Rahter, whe we get saved we are actually baptized BY the Holy Spirit into God's very "church", where is Son is the head and we are the body. Read 1 Cor 12 to see this clearly stated. I'll post the scriptures later if need be.
I was wondering that!!!
I believe they were referring to the new testament when those that started speaking in new Tongues were baptized by the Holy Spirit...
I am sure there are some who have the gift of speaking Tongues... may you please inform me on this?? Thanks :godisgood:
A believer already has the Holy Spirit living in them.
The day of Pentecost was the first time the Holy Spirit was sent to indwell believers, the first, meaning there can not be a first again or it would not be the first.
The only thing superior about one christian over another is their human ego, and that is sin.
There are many who abuse tongues, but I have yet to see any use it in a biblical way, which to me means it is not the biblical gift of tongues. The biblical gift of tongues was the ability to speak a language known by the listener, as on the day of Pentecost to communicate the gospel to someone you do not speak their language, which that day
resulted in salvations.
No matter what anyone says about thier experience compare it to scripture.
If you read 1 Corinthians, Paul is addressing problems in the Corinthian church, one of which is spiritual superiority. People were pitting their gifts against each other, saying something like, my gift is best, I'm superior and have more faith because I have this gift. Paul has already dealt with it, and we should go with scripture. No one is superior, or has more then anyone else because of which gift God chooses to give them. The assumption of somehow being more, better in anyway then any other christian because of a gift is in itself a lack of faith.
Tongues was a real gift but only for the very early Christians. It was a sign to the Jews that they would be scattered and lose their land. Paul refers to Isaiah 28 to make this point. Paul said that Tongues was a sign to unbelievers, meaning unbelieveing Isreal. We know that in 70AD God's judgement fell on Isreal and they were scattered until the 1940's. Anyway when the things happen, that a sign points to, the sign ends. Kind of like a Railroad crossing "sign". It is before the tracks and makes no sense at all to be after the tracks. So it is with tongues they faded away after 70AD. There are well meaning christians today speaking in what they call "Tongues" but they are mistaken. Good people with bad teaching is what it amounts to. Don't lose any friends over the issue but study it out and see what the Bible really says.
Hi Tali, basically "Tongues" come from peoples emotions. Can you imagine the feeling somebody gets when they think that the Holy Spirit is actually talking through them. The very words they speak actually being generated by the Holy Spirit. That is where the motivation comes from. We all want to experience God in a tangible way and Tongues gives that to people. The fact is though, and Donna said this, Tongues was never like that even when it was a gift. It was always a person speaking to another, usually a group, in a language they did not speak. It was a miracle to do this each time it was used. It was that miracle that was the "sign" I spoke about earlier. Also, the person with the Tongues gift or "Languages" gift could use it whenever they wanted. It was a miraculous ability given to the Apostles and certain other early Christians from God. Well, I'll stop for now before I get long winded.
Hi Tali, no nobody has the gift now. The gift of Tongues had a specific purpose and that purpose is now long over. As I said the purpose was to be a "sign" to the Jews that God would judge them and they would be scattered. When a pen runs out of ink you throw it away because it has served its purpose and is of no value. Tongues is the same, they served their purpose and they have no value now because they can't be the "sign" they were intended to be because the judgement happened in 70AD. Hope that helps  .
I have no idea what this is all about having a "Superior Annointing" if you speak in tongues. I have never felt that I was ever superior because of speaking in tongues. Maybe they arn't operating in the right spirit? I would be leary of a group that would try to exalt themselfs over others because they talk in tongues and others don't. There are other gifts of the Spirit besides tongues. If they were walking in love they would see the error. :flower:
It was more than a sign.
It was a way to present the Gospel in a miraculous way to those in their native tongue.
To say that God "threw out" this gift is going too far.
If I'm on a cruise ship late at night looking at the water when someone from Germany happens to be standing by me, you mean to tell me that if God wanted me to present the Gospel to him...and there was nobody around, He would not allow me to speak fluent German?
I will not limit the power of God.
WB, the throw out thing was just me making an example to make a point. Sorry to leave an impression like that. Paul said Tongues would "cease". This word in Greek "Pauo" (I think that is how it is spelled), means that Tongues will fade away on their own. Nothing happens to make them end, they just fade away. Picture a candle burning out. They faded away after 70AD, when God's judgement had fallen on Isreal, as told in Isaiah 28, which was quoted by Paul in reference to Tongues.
WB, If God miraculously lets a person now talk to another person of a different language then that is up to God. It would not be the Gift of Tongues, just God doing a one time miracle. In my 15 years of being a Christian I have never heard of that happening but I would never say it could not. The Gift of tongues, like all gifts, could be used at the discretion of the person with the Gift. It was in the person and could be used as often as the person wnated. Much like preaching gifts are used today.
Thanks for the Info. Brian!!
I have a question, where in the word of God does it state that Tongues would cease after 70AD??
Thanks that would really help??
I have heard many say this and I was just wondering where in the bible is it stated that exact date of when they would fade away.
Thanks Brian..
