Mental illness is a frequent talking point among Republican lawmakers when dealing with gun violence, to the consternation of their Democratic counterparts, who argue that the United States’ unique, widespread access to guns is to blame. Critics of the idea that mental illness leads to gun violence also argue that it stigmatizes mental illness and reinforces the unproven idea that mental health correlates with violence.

the problem is - what are the criteria for "mental illness" and who determines the criteria and subsequent seizure of firearms

e.g, is simply seeking the help/treatment of a psychologist or psychiatrist serious enough grounds for confiscation of firearms?

The problem is that the mental hospitals began in 1750 or so and closed starting with the Kennedy administration. Some say that the mental hospitals were staffed with conscientious objectors during WW II and they after the war pushed for the abolishment of hospitalization due to their communist sympathies and desires for chaos. They are probably the ones talking about stigmatization of mental illness, which is something like calling everyone a racist in terms of a cause to not have a hospital for sick people.

If a person is medically diagnosed with an incurable debilitating mental illness requiring medicine for the rest of his life, then he should not be able to own a gun. Furthermore, new mental hospitals should be built to provide care for people who have no family to care for them.

Indianapolis and many other big cities have streets full of transient mentally ill. In one stark case, there was a middle-aged man living in the alleys downtown behind a hotel and receiving disability from the federal government. His family could not take care of him and he had not been put in a mental hospital and had not committed a crime to cause him to be sent to jail or to prison. Eventually he was kicked to death by four or five teenage boys in a downtown Indianapolis alley. About a week later, one of them suffered remorse and turned himself in and named the others or the police probably never would have solved the case as the police said that they had no leads. All of this happened because Indiana does not have much left in the way of mental hospitals.

I don't think that Veterans Administration should be able to affect anyone's legal rights by an in-house ruling but should have to have a court decision or the decision should be determined by pre-existing law. Bill Cunningham was broadcasting last Sunday night near midnight that Americans want to go to court and have the police remove the guns but they want to leave the mentally ill person without compassionate mental health care.

If a person suffers from mental illness and then uses illegal drugs, that makes the medical condition exponentially worse, as you know.

Two thirds of gun deaths are suicides.

Three-fourths of mass shooters are blacks and so are the victims of such shootings. Many other countries have higher rates of mass shootings. If you extract New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles from the statistics there is not much left.

If the federal government cannot even monitor a high-level prisoner, imagine how any government agency could provide for the well-being and security of the individual citizen. One would think that the twentieth century, the darkest century in world history, wherein tens of millions of people died at the hands of their own governments, would serve as an example that the government very quickly can become an enemy of its own citizens. If nothing else, look how quickly the UK became a police state to accommodate Muslims and the left under the conservative government of May. Of course, the UK never had a bill of rights in the first place.

Because we are an expendable commodity - irredeemable deplorables which stink of Walmart, clinging to our guns and bibles and serve no useful purpose unless we vote as we are told so we just better off our selves and be done with it.

Yes, just think of all the lives, property and money could be saved if we banned matches and cigarette lighters!

It is obvious the left cares not for real lives, they care for grabbing power & keeping it. If they can throw some emotional language out there to achieve it, they will, whether it’s healthcare or guns, which are both necessary for them to control to have power over the people. They are the party of death & slavery in the modern day sense.
