I read that article when it was first published. I like to listen to Thom Hartmann's radio show. He is the most intelligent progressive I know of. He makes his points very very well. He has guests with opposing viewpoints on his show, even my fellow libertarians. :)
It's the truth. Reality has a left-wing slant. Republican voodoo economics are against the reality of how the economy works. Economies are driven by demand, not supply. Carpro, you can't deny that the Republicans run up huge deficits when they are in power and then scream about it as soon as the Democratic Party gets in power.
Reagan ran a deficit--for two reasons:
1.
After the emaciation of our military, we were in trouble from the Soviet threat.
2.
He had a Democratic congress, and didn't get all the "smaller government" he wanted.
Also, read about a fella named "Coolidge" and get back to me regarding the veracity of your claim.
You're delusional, just like the author. The first and most famous of the "tax cut" wizards to stimulate the economy was non other than John Kennedy, a democrat. Your author somehow overlooked him. Imagine that.
Commom Dreams tells us clearly what they do:
Meaning they take the news and twist it to make it look better from a progressive viewpoint. Similar to that purveyor of lies and half truths known as media matters.
Can you spell B-I-A-S ?
Just because it mirrors your own warped liberal tax and spend view of economics doesn't mean it's the truth.
Paul, I would suggest a break from college, and a visit to the "real" world for a while.
They're turning your brain to mush.
Many of the ivory-tower types you seem to enjoy following couldn't survive independently.
It's funny you mention that. I'm seriously considering working full-time and going to college part-time, at least for a while. The only issue is it would make it take longer to finish college. In all seriousness, I really do enjoy working and holding down a job. I've been in school so long that sometimes I want to bang my head against the wall. :BangHead: However, getting an education is pretty important and I'm not willing to give up on it. Is there anything in your personal experience that you think I would find helpful?
I jab at you quite a bit, but in this case I'm trying to be genuinely helpful. If you are able to stay in college full-time, do it. You've got the rest of your life to work. Finish your education now before life hits you upside the head and you have to work all the time just to make ends meet.
Republicans are bad, always have terrible motives, and wrecked the country.
Democrats are good, always have pure motives, and were sabotaged by those pesky Republicans into having to raise taxes and look bad to the public.
The article would have been better had it explained how both parties are wrecking America, trampling the constitution under foot, and are constantly lying to the American people.
I tend to agree with you. There is a chance that I could run into a situation where I can't do school full-time. For example, not working at all is not an option. If I can only find a full-time job, I'm going to do that. Before I did my Census job I was unemployed for a while and flat out broke. I live with my grandparents, which is probably the best thing for the time being. When I was broke, I had to ask them for money to get gas in my car just to get to class. That's not where I want to be. It's not fair to them and it feels terrible to be totally financially dependent. I'm very grateful to them for helping me, because I would have been screwed if they didn't. The problem wasn't that I didn't want to work, it was that I couldn't find a job. Now I have more experience and references and I'm willing to do just about any kind of work, so things are looking up in my job hunt.
I have got to get money to pay for personal expenses, my car, etc. Right now, I have money in my credit union account that should last a few more months, but finding a job is my number one priority now. I'm just not willing to go back to where I was financially.
Anyone else remember "contract with America?" Republican House candidates made all kinds of promises because they expected to lose in the senate. They won both houses and never introduced legislation on half the items.
This article is historically an economically ignorant.
For instance, Goldwater and Hoover's economic views were different.
Hoover, for instance, used stimulus measures to try to spur the economy at the collapse of our economy-- Goldwater would have opposed these measures.
As well, most Presidents until the modern era believed you stimulated the economy by reducing taxes on the rich.
JFK famously said that because of the poor economy in his day that an across the board tax cuts were needed.
So to blame Reagan for being the "First" shows the vast ignorance of the left in this article.
I think the Republicans deserve much blame for poor economic policies, but lying to try to blame them for these problems is just as ignorant and a part of the problem, not the solution.
And all the demand in the world will do nothing useful unless there is supply to match.
Also, when demand is artificially stimulated (such as with the housing bubble), resources are redirected from more productive endeavors to those less productive endeavors brought on by the stimulus.
