SOCHI - If there were any doubts whether Team USA could match its form and intensity from Vancouver four years ago, they were quickly dispelled Thursday at Shayba Arena during a high-energy 7-1 hockey rout over Slovakia.
Nothing much went wrong in this impressive, polished opener. The Americans scored six goals in the second period, four of them on four shots during one exquisite span. The Americans skated seamlessly, made their passes count and simply appeared too fast for a mid-level opponent that had owned a 1-0-1 record against the U.S. in prior Olympics.
If you didn't know better, you would think these guys had been playing together for a full season, not three days. Paul Stastny, whose father Peter once was flagbearer for the Slovakian team at the 1994 Olympics, scored twice himself in that decisive second period.

No US team has won gold unless playing on home ice. We're a long way from claiming that's possible in this tournament, but ...
Nice start!!

T.J. Oshie's shootout goal and outstanding netminding by Jonathan Quick delivered a shootout victory over Russia in the Winter Games. Final score: 3-2. Oshie, of the St. Louis Blues, scored to beat Russia in the eighth round of the shootout. On the American roster in part because of his one-on-one ability, Oshie took six of the USA's attempts, made four of them and could've scored on every one.

If they beat Latvia tomorrow, they've got a first-round bye in the quarterfinals.

Sorry, I meant Slovenia. No matter. They beat them, too, 5-1. First round bye into the elimination quarterfinals.
SOCHI, Russia -- Phil Kessel is the first American in more than a decade to score a hat trick in an Olympic hockey tournament.
He's more interested in something no American has accomplished on Olympic ice since 1980 -- winning a gold medal.
Kessel scored two of his three goals within the opening five minutes to lead the U.S. to a 5-1 win against Slovenia on Sunday. The U.S. is undefeated through three games and if it can win three more, the nation will celebrate its first Olympic championship in hockey since the "Miracle on Ice" at the Lake Placid Games.

Russia is out . That's a big surprise. USA plays in the semis tomorrow against Canada. That, in reality, is the gold-medal game.

Well, rats!
The game was scoreless after a fast-paced first period, with both goalies tested early on, both looking sharp. Canada’s Jamie Benn opened up the scoring in the second, with a beautiful tip-in goal off a Jay Bouwmeester shot. The U.S. had three power plays in the first two periods, but Team Canada’s penalty kill was solid, shutting the Americans down.
Both teams headed into the third period looking for that crucial second goal of the game – it never came. A nation of hockey fans held their breath and waited out the clock. By the final horn, Benn’s goal was enough to send Canada to the gold medal round.

Really tough game for them. As defense rather than offense sealed the deal for both teams until Canada drove in the only but crucial shot in the game.
All of these teams seem to be made up of NHL players! You would think that would have helped.

Teemu Selanne scored two goals and Tuukka Rask had a 26-save shutout, helping Finland rout the United States 5-0 Saturday to win hockey bronze at the Sochi Games.
Selanne, a 43-year-old, six-time Olympian, and Jussi Jokinen scored 11 seconds apart early in the second period. The Finns scored three goals in the third period against a team that looked like it would rather be at home.

Seems like the U.S. team pretty much decided if they couldn't play for gold, they wouldn't play at all. Right wing Patrick Kane even had two -- two!! -- penalty shots, one in each of the first two periods and couldn't convert on either one of them.
