I hope you'll pardon my mistake. It is not the lifting of hands that was spoken against. It was the clapping of hands in worship.
(I had quoted Clement of Alexandria on clapping hands in a previous debate long ago.)
I just did a quick search of ccel.org for lifting of hands, and from my quick perusal I would have to say that when men led in prayer they did raise their hands.
There is, however, a marked difference between what I read (which so far has not been a study, just a quick perusal) between what I see commended by the church fathers and the practice I see in charismatic churches.
I'll post on this later when I have time.
So far I have to agree that men customarily lifted their hands in prayer. -
But since there is the admission of agreeance here, can we conclude that Masters is quite mistaken when he says that such lifting of hands was merely a figure of speech? -

Why not use the organ to back up praise songs? We do it at church all the time! If you don't think that the organ is suitable for contemporary beats, I suggest you visit a baseball stadium
-
And from what I've heard at baseball games, the organ plays specific songs - I've never heard an organ try to play "Who Let the Dogs Out" for example. -
The organist at Edison Field (Anaheim Angels) is also a church organist. If you attend an Angels game, it's not unusual to hear "Lord I Lift Your Name on High" "Shine Jesus Shine", or "This is the Day" intermingled in with "We Are Family", or "We Will Rock You".
