MINNEAPOLIS (Dec. 9) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said Tuesday it will pay up to $54.25 million to settle a class-action lawsuit that alleged the discount giant cut workers' break time and didn't prevent employees from working off the clock in Minnesota.

Well, when you cut employee's break time then allow them to work off the clock you have made yourself open to the union. You can't blame the union for being a union and if management treated the workers fair they would not have to fear union's being voted in.

WalMart is by far the most profitable store in existence. Giving workers a break or paying them for time worked would far from put them out of business. The fact is they can be fair to the workers without even raising any prices. Just give up a little of the profits.

Just about every other retail store in the United States has a vast number of products with the "Made in China" label attached to it. Shut WalMart down and the slack will be picked up by some other retailer hocking "Made in China" products.

Wal-Mart’s shelves are stocked with values because they are relentlessly hammering their suppliers for cheaper products, using the chain’s immense buying clout to play manufacturers against one another to produce ever-cheaper products. "The Wal-Mart Effect" talks about a Chicago fan company where the workers had made $13 an hour; due to pressure from Wal-Mart, the owner now has fans made in China by workers earning 25 cents an hour. In poor countries around the world, people work more hours for less money, always with the threat that Wal-Mart might move their job to another company or country where workers will accept even greater depredations.

Why should their break times be cut? Unless they're taking longer breaks than authorized, they're break times are only half an hour for lunch and two 15 minute breaks. I think that's reasonable.

What Walmart really needs more than shorter breaks is more workers and better customer service. Right now their customer service is pretty much non-existent. Also, they need to treat their employees with some respect; that too is non-existent. I worked there for about 9 months after retirement and left because of the lack of respect from everyone--other employees, managers, and customers.

COSTCO has better merchandise and is a union shop. Consumers Report usually rates COSTCO as having lowest price IF they have what you want. No, I have no personal strings to COSTCO but enjoy shopping there.

Costco's attitude and service is far superior too. They also have better products.

No COSTCO within 25 miles of here. 3 WALLMARTs within 15 miles. I would rather shop elswhere but the prices at other places are much higher.

I don't care if they are union or not, but they must be required to abide by the labor laws.

the fact it is a union shop is enough to send me away. Thw Walmart shop near me have good service, large supplies and polite staff. Made in China! What isn't? Unless it is made in India.

Recently I talked with a businessman and he told me that buying made in China helps the national debt.

Anyone who is the middle man makes more than anyone else.

Some people just can't stand to see success. They prefer mediocrity- like Kmart, which sells as much 'Made in China' as Walmart, if not more.

I personally detest Kmart because they filed bankruptcy a few years ago and then right out of bankruptcy turned around and bought Sears.

You don't like Kmart because they filed for bankruptcy, closed some stores, made some major changes, got back on their feet and was able to buy another chain?

I guess it's the same logic that some use for not liking Walmart.:laugh:

Actually I just thought it was underhanded for them to sluff off paying their bills and then buy Sears almost right out of bankruptcy. That's just my personal feeling. Maybe (probably) it isn't logical but that's my feeling.

In the Pacific North West most of the K-Marts are an ugly mess.
