I had previously mentioned over in the alcohol thread that I find it strange that the same people who get all hung up about any form of alcohol and often quote health reasons are often the same people who just totally ignore gluttony and the vast amounts of bad food that they are shoving down their throats. I think this is hypocritical. I think that's what was being referenced.
But yes, gluttony applies to alcohol just as it does to food, so yes there is a connection there, regardless of any of my comments. I do not promote the overconsumption of alcohol just as I do not promote the overconsumption of food, especially food that is harmful. I think both are just as bad quite honestly.
what do you think about gluttony?

"With so much emphasis on proper eating and physical exercise here in America, it has caused many to examine their lifestyles. A lot of people have now become out of balance by putting too much emphasis on the physical man while neglecting the spiritual man. The other extreme is to be so spiritually-minded that we neglect our bodies by overeating or lack of exercise. The Lord desires order in this area, as our physical condition, if it is not properly cared for, affects our spiritual condition. We cannot serve the Lord to the fullest if our bodies are run down and tired and not functioning as God designed them to function. The medical world is now recognizing that gluttony is one of the major causes of many of our modern day illnesses. Moderation should be our guide." -
Quotes from CornDogggy:
"I do not promote the overconsumption of alcohol just as I do not promote the overconsumption of food, especially food that is harmful. I think both are just as bad quite honestly."
"Basically, whether you are lazy or not, the sin of gluttony in my opinion is simply eating alot more than what you need."
CornDogggy:
After about 19 years without a drink I think I can safely say that I don't need ANY alcohol. So, if I apply your theory, and eat and drink only what I actually need, then I will eat in moderation but drink NO alcohol.
Is that the correct conclusion friend?

Do you "need" to watch movies? Do you "need" to read a book? Do you "need" a scoop of ice cream? Do you even "need" any one particular form of food, say, beef?
No, of course not. Alcohol is simply something to be enjoyed, and can have some benefits if enjoyed in moderation, yet have consequences if you enjoy too much of it, just like many other things that I'm quite sure you enjoy yet don't "need". -
I can truthfully say I have "needed" a scoop of Rocky Road from Bruster's Ice Cream stand.
Now, back to your regularly scheduled fight. -
Now I don't have a problem with folks exercising moderation in eating. That is a good thing to do. However, I do have a problem with making the guidelines of the AMA into Holy writ. That just creates another form of legalism.

Mmmmm boy... shredded mechanically separated mixture of beef and chicken with sodium nitrate covered in battered and deep fried! It's heaven on earth I tell you.
joking. It's an old college nickname. Long story. -
In a previous thread on the FFF, I compared the sin of gluttony to homosexuality....they are both a choice...and they are both a sin. However, I would like to stress that gluttony is a choice that stems from necessity. We have to eat to survive....,but we do not have to have intercourse to survive.
In and of themselves....eating and sex are not sinful. However, they can be misused and abused in the wrong manner. There are many actions that humans do that (when done properly) are not sinful; however, when misused they are. For example: shopping, discipline, medicine, driving...... -

I think it would be helpful to find a definition of gluttony...
fat people can be gluttons
So can skinny people.
How much extra would you have to have before you became a glutton?
You see where this is going? It always turns into a legalistic battle.
Humans need guidelines to go by... It is our nature, the problem is we become gluttons for rules.... sometimes to prove we are better than others....
"I'm not a glutton, but you are" is an attitude of pride.
"I thank God I am not a glutton like others..." is too.
"I dont drink alcohol, so everyone that does is not as holy as I" Is also a prideful statement.
Pride is a sin just like gluttony, or drunkeness....
Those that are proud that they are skinny, and sober are still sinners....they are prideful! The same sin that Satan committed!
Oh, I forgot one.... "I dont work on Sundays so I am right with God, if you were saved you would not work either".... a statement that is dripping with sin, like the fat dripping off a sows belly,....pride -
the thing we (meaning I) have to remember to is that it's easy to point out each other's sin, but God does the convicting. What I see happening lots of times is that we point to the sin and don't wait for God's conviction or the person to respond to that conviction.
Of course I work with youth, but when I work with adults, I see the same behavior. -
I don't know about everybody else, but I stand with the apostle Paul who wrote: "I buffet my body and bring it under control...."
Every time I go through the buffet line, I think of him.
I bet you thought in that passage, Paul was saying he buffeted (pronounced buffettt) his body, meaning self-discipline and training. Naw, he buffayed his body. Is there now any doubt that Paul was a Baptist? -

I don't know... I had a piece of apple pie for desert today... I didn't need it so was I guilty of gluttony?
Nah, the diet pepsi I had cancelled out the calories in the pie...
It does work that way, doesn't it?
