What Does It Really Mean to “Go Deeper”?

People in church like to sound spiritual by saying, “I want to go deeper.” To me, this is the most overused and often overrated comment people make in church. Why do I say this? Because, more often than not, it means “Bible Study” and it reflects a person’s desire to be thought of as pious or spiritual. Yet, rather than throw this statement out, I want to reclaim and redefine it.

If I hear that, I usually encourage that person seeking out personal discipleship that will not only drive them to more investment into the Scriptures, but also a relationship that will model what it means to be a fully invested Christ-Follower looks like.

I agree with you, "go deeper" is an overused phrase that most probably have no idea what they are saying. So, my drive is to define it for them and tell them how they can do it.

 

Some go so deep, they are stuck in the mud.

I wish I knew the source of this quote about a preacher:
"He can go down deeper, stay down longer, and come up drier than any preacher I know."

 

In my experience it involves folks who are at a point in their walk with Christ where they need to start feeding themselves rather than depending on someone else to do all the work for them. They, themselves, need to start teaching and serving. They are babies who are refusing to grow up in Christ (always learning but never growing).

 

That's the same line as, "I'm not getting fed here."
