I wish people didn't make personal attacks either. It is certainly ok to disagree with a person, but there is no reason to attack their character in the process. And of course we can all get frustrated from time to time.
I think when I have made this mistake in the past its because I become more interested in being right than loving my brother or sister.

It's usually a sign that they have nothing else with which to attack.
I used to work in talk radio occasionally, and that was a very common tactic in discussing any subject, and it was one of the few things that would get you disconnected.
(Resorting to vulgarity would as well, but that usually accompanied the personal attacks.)
We would sometimes let it go because it simply discredits them, but it gets old quickly.
