Ah yes... so you did.

So no instruments at all? Ever? Seriously or joking?

Preference or you think that should be normative?

I've calmed down since last night. I'm sorry I snapped.

I thought I had made it clear in previous threads that I listen to some secular music, and seeing as I made my music tastes clear...well.

Part of what angered me, Jordan, was that you were accusing others--my brothers and sisters in Christ. That's just not okay in my book, and that was what drew out my initial ire. Normally people can say whatever they want about me and I don't care, but in this case you caught me off guard and you hit a sore spot.

My dad was one of the most spiritual people I knew. He had a lot of Bible knowledge and wisdom, and I admired that. He endured to the end, despite a fiery trial of living his last decade bedridden--those years were turbulent, and I think he suffered from depression a lot.
Despite his staunch stand against Christian rock, I caught him listening to the Beatles. He had a YouTube playlist dedicated to them. He watched TV programs my mom clicked her tongue at, and I often watched them with him. He enjoyed crime shows, including Law and Order, NCIS , and Monk.
His views on music or anything else never seemed to change, but he did get less strict and judge mental (the word he himself used) as he got older.

Does the fact that he listened to and enjoyed the Beatles or watched things others maybe wouldn't have approved of make him any less of a Christ follower? He produced fruit; he was a witness where ever he went, and people told us after he died that his life inspired them.

I had another one when my steak was gone, while listening to Eric Clapton, and watching the Kings game. Life is good.

'Unplugged' has been one of my favorite CDs for years.

Acapella only in the worship service for me, singing those old traditional instructional hymns.

IF you want to argue for CCM, or other Christian genres, than I'm willing to accept that.

But when you blatantly say you listen to the worlds music (80s Alternative), what do you expect?

You're life is suppose to be pleasing the Lord, how does 80s alternative do this?

If Jesus walked in when you were playing 80s alternative are you honestly telling me that you would be comfortable?

I sincerely believe if you are doing this that it is hurting your relationship with the Lord whether you realize it (Or believe it) or not.

Listen, The Lord has called us to be Holy, and unspotted from the world.

James_1:27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

What kind of testimony would it be to lost people if you are listening to the same music as them? can you say with an honest heart that 80's alternative is unspotted from the world?

Listen, I love the Lord, and I want to see others succeed and live for Jesus, My intentions are not to put others down or to judge them, But I am very concerned for Christians I see who seem to want to justify worldiness for the sake of personal preference and pleasure.

Life is not about our personal preferences and pleasures, it is about self denial, in all areas, this includes music, How many people honestly choose their music with the intention of wanting to please the Lord?

How many people do you honestly think are doing this?

We cannot be filled with the Spirit when we are trying to have our own personal preferences.

I wonder how many people have honestly said Lord what musical styles please you? What kind of music really brings honor and glory to your name?

Many of you probably disagree with me, but I notice when you tell someone their music might be worldly, instead of responding in humility and thinking about it, they get all super defensive, if you really know it pleases the Lord, than why do you get all upset when someone raises a question about it, if you really know it pleases the Lord?

or is it that you're conscience deep down inside is bothering you, and that the Holy Spirit is convicting you?

If you know your music is pleasing to the Lord, than don't worry about what I say, If you feel yourself getting angry and defensive, than maybe you need to do some prayer and self searching.

Again, my intention is not to tear people down, I do not get pleasure out of conflict, I want to see people serve the Lord Jesus Christ, and with out nation going the way it is, we desperately need Christians who are walking in holiness and are actually close to the Lord.

Again I am not saying anyone here is not close to the Lord, but It does concern me when I see people trying to justify things I perceive to be worldy.

someone here is wrong, and we can't abandon truth, many of you here seem to have this judge not philosphy, as if we cannot say something is wrong or sinful,

Morality is black and white and we are suppose to rebuke and exhort others.

    Tit 2:12-15 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
    Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.
These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.

I'm sorry but to me, The world's music is wicked and sinful,
if you saw someone on here posting and saying they watch pornography when they get home to relax, would that not upset you and cause to you to want to rebuke?

I am sorry If I have offended people, but I am sick of this ideology in Christian circles that it's wrong to have standards and that it's somehow wrong to have a beliefs of black and white morality.

What kind of hypocrite would I be if I didn't hold to true to my beliefs?

Do you honestly expect me to be quiet about seeing others promote what I view as blatant sin?

I posted these verses once, and i am going to post them again.

Colossians 3:16-17 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

    Eph 5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

Secular music is neither a pslam, hymn, or spiritual song and you know it.

And yes these verses are talking about music, You simply seemed to try and explain them away earlier.

You and everyone who honestly reads these verses knows that 80s Alternative does not conform to these verses.

You guys can come up with arguments all day, but secular music is not spiritual music....

    Let's be honest with ourselves.

Tell me. If I were to listen to, say...
    Bicycle Built for Two
    Whistle While You Work
    The Holly and the Ivy

...while doing housework, would you consider that more acceptable?

Yet these songs aren't anymore spiritual than '70s and '80s music such as Devo's Whip It, Cars' Shake It Up, or Weird Al Yankovic's Dare to be Stupid.

Why is one set okay despite being not a tad spiritual, but the other isn't? Is it the buzz word "modern" or "contemporary"?
The first set was as worldly for it's time as the second set.

Jordan, don't think I haven't struggled with this in the past. I have. Don't think I haven't prayed about it. I have. Don't think I didn't think to consider how it was affecting my spirit. I have.

Jordan, I know a motorcyclist with tattoos, who looks like a typical biker, who is more spiritual and does more for God and witnesses more than half the congregation at the IFB church I grew up in.
You judge people by their fruit, not their entertainment choices or appearance.

    1. I am not talking about certain "Christian" music styles right now, I am talking abut secular music at this point.

James_1:27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

1John_2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

Romans_12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

James 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

    2. I am sorry for offending you.

Pornography is clearly and demonstrably a sin and can be shown as such in scripture with little room for argument. Listening to music isn't, you won't find that anywhere in the Bible.

Jordan, the Bible speaks of liberty. Romans 14 is one of the best known passages about this.

Scripture instructs the brother allowing himself more freedom to be careful not to offend another brother or allow himself to be a stumbling block--but it also says that no one is to judge the brother's liberty. There are inevitably areas which Christians will disagree with each other on--scripture calls for respect on both sides.

Does secular music pass the test of Eph 5:19 and Col 3:16?

Does that include when we take the music of wicked classic composers and use them in our hymns?

And are you claiming that all music that is not 'spiritual' is sin?

I just can't sit here and let this fly.

Do you love going online with your computer and having conversations?
The internet is of the world. If you use the internet you love the world.

Do you read newspapers or online news sites?
The news reports on events going on in the world. If you read the news, you love the world. How does reading the news prove the perfect and acceptable will of God? If you are interested in the news, according to the verse you posted from James, you are an enemy of God.

    Do you like ice cream?
Ice cream is a "thing in the world".
    etc. etc. etc.

And BTW, you haven't addressed preachinjesus' point about Paul quoting from secular poets in Acts 17. Was Paul wrong to quote a worldly poet?

Again, does traditional music from culture such as Bicycle Built for Two?

    Does The Waltons?

    Does Leave it to Beaver?

    Does Pacman?

    Does Bugs Bunny?

Does going for a ride in a convertible with the top down and feeling the wind in your hair?

Jordan, by your definition of this verse, almost nothing would be acceptable. Do you avoid literally anything that cannot be directly traced back to God or scripture? Forgive me for being so bold, but you're being ridiculous.

Jordan, the verse does not say I can't enjoy things in moderation. The problem is when they become an idol. And anything can become an idol. My pets could become an idol, if they were all I ever thought about and I spent so much time with them that I neglected prayer and Bible reading.

Of course not. Secular music does not teach and admonish others in the way of the Lord. Neither does employment in most jobs, going to the grocery store, going to most colleges, eating, sleeping, participating in sports, knitting, fishing, doing crosswords, gardening, photography, redecorating your home, changing the oil in your car, etc. etc..

Listening to music that is not explicitly Christian, so long as it's not anti-Christian, or does not promote sin, is no sin.
