Let's summarize.
Depression is not just a spiritual problem.
It does not indicate that a person has sinned any more than a heart attack does.
Depression is a complex combination of physical, spiritual, and psychological problems which is not yet fully understood by doctors (or ministers).
I recognize that the brain is more than a physical organ.
It is the seat of our emotions and obviously the source of our intelligence.
I recognize that the brain is more complex and does readily not lend itself to medical examination as do other organs in the body. However, if the brain is a physical organ then it can have an illness or malfunction just like the heart, the liver, or any other organ in the body.
If the brain is not a physical organ then what kind of organ is it?
Perhaps some of the medical doctors on the Forum can enlighten me.
Do Christians have to be doctors to understand spiritual issues? Comparing cancer to depression is apples and oranges. Example.... I was watching the movie Pink Panter 2 with my wife last night and he"Steve Martin" was made to look bad in a situation and he came home and said "I am depressed". Situations play a part in our brains if you must.....so we are to be renewed in the spirit of your mind. You can say its all physical, but I contest it's our view of things that contribute to this. BTW Martins depression vanished after things "situation" turned around and he was happy once again.
Don't use a ridiculous movie where someone says I am depressed because someone hurt their feelings to judge whether someone has clinical depression or not.
Just because someone has a bad day and are down does not mean they have clinical depression.
If that is your understanding of depression then you should avoid discussion of the illness.
Some of the posts on this thread show a pathetic ignorance about clinical depression.
Post #145 by Jedi Knight is a perfect example. A man is "depressed" because he has a bad day.
Then he is happy, not "depressed" because he had a good day.
THAT IS NOT CLINICAL DEPRESSION
Clinical depression is not just feeling sad for a day or two.
It is a debilitating disease.
Do you have ANY experience with it either yourself or close friends or relatives?
Several of us here do.
If you don't what gives you the right to speak so authoritatively about this disease?
I agree a day or two that continues becomes chronic "not clinical"!
I think its silly to call it clinical depression when you throw out the biblical help guide. Most doctors become wealthy off people not turning to the maker for help. If ya got cancer go to the doctor and seek God too. But depression even for long bouts is not cancer or heart disease or clinical disease like herpes. I have been depressed for weeks even months and know other believers who have years of it. But I bet when the children of Israel were judged by the Lord and wandering aimlessly 40 years they were depressed all the way! Moses wrote about it in the Psalm 90...not a happy picture and no Word of Faith "name it and claim it" or doctor saying you got "clinical depression" gonna get them outta that jam!
ad hominems (both direct and oblique) or not: For anyone to argue that clinical depression is only a spiritual problem is speaking either from ignorance or pious arrogance.
I assume there are no medical doctors on this forum to give factual content; and frankly pastors seem to be poorly equipped to address the issue.
I could give numerous sites where anyone could read about clinical depression [Not just feeling down because someone hurt your feelings as presented in an example by Jedi Knight.] or present personal experience from dealing with those with clinicial depression but it would be met with the same pious arrogance that previous posts by Freedom, Ed Edwards, and myself have been greeted.
Spurgeon has been dead for well over 100 years. That question is beyond ridiculous.
Just what is your point?
Is this another example of pious arrogance? Are you advocating digging him up and doing an autopsy?
I would advise you to read Jim1999's post #47 regarding Spurgeon's accomplishments
and not worry about Spurgeon's health problems.
Old Regular, the topic of this thread is Spurgeon's depression.
Since you are a self-professing expert on clinical depression, I thought you might know.
Are you saying that you don't know?
Just trying to explore the topic and squeeze a little more vinegar out of you!
