It's probably an overall good thing that Hastings didn't get the position. It's one thing to have his home district not be bothered by these serious past allegations, but another thing to be a leader in the majority party.
This, and the other incident, has somehow managed to make Pelosi look weak and ineffective before she's even been sworn as House Speaker. It's giving her an image problem she'd better try to overcome, or her own party will replace her next summer.
