Marcia,

I read your bio on your web site and it sounds very much like a book I read several years ago called "The Beautiful Side of Evil" I am sure you are familiar with it and probably know the writer.

Thanks for sharing your ministry I have book marked it and will spend some time there in the future.

We are offering complimentary coffee or tea to anyone who wants to come discuss the movie. We're praying for a good response and opportunities to share the gospel.

To prepare for this I have read the book and I plan to see the movie.
I love this idea!

I read the book too. I don't think I'll see the movie until it comes out in DVD. I think that it will be difficult to discuss the fallacies of the book if it's not been read -- at least to discuss them with any authority.

My pastor preached for three weeks on the DaVinci code, but approached it from defending your faith and not attacking the book. That can certainly be done without reading the book!

Sinful to see it? Well, as Christians we are commanded to abstain from all appearance of evil. When Ron Howard said to go and see to form your own opinion, I thought I heard the same voice that spoke to Eve: go ahead, try it, it won't hurt you. Food for thought.

Thanks for your comments, thjplgvp! Yes, I did read that book. Her experiences had some similarity to mine yet there are some differences as well. I think I was involved in the New Ager much longer than she was -- close to 20 yrs. for me if you count it from the time I started reading books and changing my views.

Glad you like my site! I hope you find it helpful.

Wow, this is one of the best ideas I've heard on what churches are doing!! Good for you guys! I guess people who are volunteering to talk need to be prepared with some info, such as the early church, Council of Nicea, and what the Gnostic gospels are about.

I'm speaking to sr. high teens this Sunday at another church (it's part 2 of a 2-part talk), and I'm going to discuss the Kabbalah and the Da Vinci Code.

Yes, Marcia, those are topics we are trying to be prepared to handle. Four of us will be involved in the discussions: my pastor, two seminary guys who intern at our church, and me. We have a list of 9-10 questions to launch the discussion and who knows where it will go from there? The diner is frequented by students from three nearby colleges and a neighborhood that is heavily Roman Catholic. Our approach has been to be prepared on a wide variety of topics and ready for the unexpected question. We won't know what the specific concerns of the audience will be until we hear them.

A futuristic concern gathered from the reading of the many thoughts related to the DaVinci Code is as follows.

One of the things I have not seen on any of the sites or threads that deal with Gnosticism is a reference to one of their primary beliefs that Christ did not resurrect in the flesh. The Gnostics of Paul’s day believed that all matter was evil and therefore embraced spiritual enlightenment and spiritual resurrection. Paul shows the fallacy of their beliefs in 1 Corinthians 15.

This view, at least in part, was part of the controversy concerning Arianism at Council of Nicea. Are Jesus and God the same in essence? The Gnostics maintained that Jesus could not have been God because all physical matter is evil therefore Jesus in the flesh could not have been God. (I now there were other matters as well).

My concern is this, if the Gnostic view, as portrayed by this book and film, leads to a general acceptance of their false beliefs by the world then the victory over death by the physical resurrection of Christ is somehow undermined and robbed of the power of the hope that it generates.

A people with no hope can be led to believe many things including a universal lie.
2 Thessalonians 2:10-12 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

Hey thjplgvp,
Good observation. One of the problems with dan Brown's argument is that he bases it on gnostic writings, yet he comes to the opposite conclusion of the gnostics. They believed that Jesus was divine, but COULD NOT have been human. Brown thinks Jesus was a good man, but was not divine. Go figure!!!

Some of the things in the book I noticed to be from the Kabbalah (i.e., the Shekinah being the female consort of God -- from what I researched in writing on this topic, some teachings claim that the Shekinah is the feminine aspect of God. God is composed of male and female "sides." This is also behind the belief that only a married man can study Kabbalah -- he has access to the feminine side of God through relations with his wife).

Swaimj, I have a favor to ask -- please post here or maybe in the Missions/Witnessing forum what happens at your outreach. I am sure many of us would like to know! Just be sure to put Da Vinci in the subject line so we can find it!

Marcia,
I'll put a report on this thread. Thanks for the interest.

BTW, the movie is getting really bad reviews. We're wondering if anybody is going to be there to watch it!!!

I have seen the reviews for the movie too, but sometimes the movies that get the worst reviews by critics turn out to be highly favored by the public.

See if you can sneak into the theater without being seen--that way you won't have to pay them any of your hard-earned money. :D
